On my sim-racing rig, the keyboard is roughly 4 ft from the USB dongle. I frequently have to power cycle to get key strokes detected. Often times portions of words are missing. The mouse functions 95% of the time, with those last 5% being noticeable delays.
At my desk, the USB dongle is behind my monitor, so at most 26 inches and visually obstructed by a 27in LCD screen. That is enough that my mouse probably works half the time. When it acts up, I need to disconnect the dongle and power cycle the mouse. This keyboard (also no more than 26 inches) is more consistent than the keyboard with 4ft of separation and no impacts to line of sight. But I frequently have to power cycle it as well...on the order of once per hour.
I picked up a MK540 at Amazon ($34 used) to replace the MK270 at my desk. I don't like the bigger size...but I never have a problem. $34 for something which works is significantly cheaper than $19 for something that doesn't work as it should. This is definitely a case of you can save money or you can save annoyance.

I'll only used wired inputs for gaming now, and use a USB hub to get my dongle closer.

For a spare setup that hardly gets used, maybe you can use it for that. For daily use, you're really mistreating yourself using junk like this.
