Not to be pedantic, but I see a price of $183 on this, which is $40+ more than the linked product.
Is $40 more worth it to get something made in Japan?

Had the Japan made one. The non stick scratches insanely easy. Even with their own scoop. It's ridiculous. Very unfortunate.

I have this, and it obviously makes nice rice but it's so inconvenient as the rice takes 40mins+ to cook.

Our rice cooker broke about a week ago, so pardon a dumb, but legitimately sincere question: what does a rice cooker at this price range offer over a cheaper one?

Besides hopefully not breaking. :-D
Offers to take more money out of your wallet. Truthfully, I can only tell you my Cuckoo brand makes perfect Jasmine and regular rice every time and keeps it warm for hours. Measuring is easy due to water lines on inside pot and cup it comes with.

This is the one I bought and recommend for my purposes:

When we moved to Japan we bought a $5 used Tiger 3-cup cooker and it was the best $5 we've ever spent. EVER. These things are worth their weight in gold. Just know that a 5.5c cooker is pretty large and will make nearly 12 cups of cooked rice. If it's only 2 of you and you're cooking for dinner (and/or leftovers the next day)you don't need one of these giant ones. You can get a small one and save money and space.

Great rice cooker, great price. Use included rice cup to measure (3/4 US cup), rinse rice 3 times, set timer and rice will be ready when you want it. Best rice cooker ever.

I disagree about the basmati rice, I followed their guide online and it makes absolutely perfect basmati rice. It's a 2:1 ratio, but we adjust it to our preferences.
I have the fuzzy rice version and I love it.
The spouse hates it, they say it takes a long time to cook. My counter argument is that this appliance will keep the rice perfect for 12+ hours.
I also use the instant pot for a large quantity of rice, I have no complaints about that.
Also, whoever was hiding the basmati rice my whole life can ligma. Long grain white rice is simply the worst rice.
In what situation does one need to keep rice warm for 12+ hours? I never use the warm function on my rice cooker

I have Asian friends who eat rice with every meal. They make rice in the morning and use the keep warm setting so they have hot rice ready for their lunch and dinner. I personally don't do this being worried ( maybe overly worried ) about bacterial growth, though they tell me they have been doing this their entire lives without issue.

I've been using the same Zojirushi 10 cup fuzzy logic rice cooker since 2003. Still makes perfect rice. Rice is usually made 1:1 rice to water + 1/2 water. If you make one "cup" of rice using the measuring cup that comes with the rice cooker, it is not a US 8 oz cup. It is smaller. If you make more than one "cup" of rice, use the measurements on the inside of the pot insert of the rice cooker instead of measuring the water using the cup. I tried measuring using the cup for the water and the rice was drier than normal. It looks like the measurements on the inner pot take into account a longer cook time and increases the amount of water to more than the normal 1:1 +1/2 water probably to account for the extra steam loss. My rice is always picture perfect when measuring out the water using the measuring lines on the inner pot. Hope this helps.😃
