I absolutely love Monster Train and have it on multiple platforms. Objectively speaking, Slay the Spire is a better game, but if you want a slightly different spin on the genre and some added layers of complexity, I found Monster Train to be fun and to have a ton of replayability. It was free on gog.com through gaming.amazon.com for amazon prime subscribers last fall, so make sure that you don't have it already before you purchase (those codes are good until 2/21/25 if you didn't redeem it yet). Even though it was free there, I still bought it again on Switch so that I could play on the go.

I FIND THIS far better than Slay the spire ,

1. The mixing of two heros is great
2. Having a primary HERO card is also more fun
3. Position of heros matters , Multiple floors in one battle
Just a better game than STS

How does this compare to Slay the Spire, which I love? Anyone have experience with both games and mind dropping some quick thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Great game. I wanted to try a battle card type game and, as this was free on Apple Arcade I gave it a whirl. Been playing it every day since.

I've also downloaded Slay The Spire but haven't played it too much yet as I'm still getting a lot of value out of the Apple Arcade version of Monster Train (no daily challenges, or online play for the Apple Arcade version which is called 'Monster Train+')

I liked it so much that I even paid 9 bucks for the 'regular' version.

Heads up Monster Train 2 has been announced so this might become .99 soon.

I would describe Monster Train as feeling moderately less-likely to put you in genuinely-unwinnable-from-the-start-it's-just-that-you-don't-know-it-yet scenarios, but also less moddable and replayable than Slay the Spire.

Of the three Slay the Spire-inspired games I've played (the other two being Pirates: Outlaws and Neoverse) it's the one I'd recommend as best-designed from a gameplay-mechanics standpoint.

objectively speaking, STS isn't a better game though... this has more features and more ways to interact

Yeah monster tain has waaay more build variety than StS. The way its designed can lead to you regularly having builds centered around pretty much any card or relic. I have played many roguelike deckbuilders and this one is easily the best imo

The DLC is 'fine'. You get it free with the Apple Arcade version. It's an extra boss, with a boss rush as part of the final level. What is fun about it, is the ability to merge the abilities of you Units and Spells to make some interesting combinations. All with the added challenge of extra difficulty every time you do so.

There's a number of cool YouTubers out there that record their runs. Have a look at their videos. I find myself watching some of them from time to time to get a bit better at the strategy of the game at higher 'Covenant' levels when I get stuck.
