I've always used Corelle plates, the classic white ones. Rarely did they break with 3 kids growing up. Recently bought a set with the black trim around the edges and they are complete trash. 2 days in my daughter dropped a plate and it shattered into a million little fragments. I was totally shocked. The white plates have been dropped so many times I stopped counting and nothing ever happened to them. On top of this, the new ones are also chipping along the edges and the black paint is coming off. Did Corelle stop making the indestructible plates they were always known for?

I am a corelle collector and so have used the vintage 80s patterns for years. We also have new solid white plates and I have to say we have never noticed a difference. You have to buy the vitrelle series, the other lines are just regular ceramic. In the last five years the only piece I remember breaking is a vintage spring blossom bowl. You can find vintage sets for sale regularly on shopgoodwill or the like.

New Corelle is most certainly not like the old. I have some plates that my mom gave me back many years ago and they look brand new. I bought a set from Amazon three years ago and the edges are all chewed up from the dishwasher and three of them shattered just like you described when my kids dropped them. My sister is currently on a mission to find me a set at a thrift shop of the vintage good stuff πŸ˜‚.
Corelle got into hot water about the paint they used on some plates. It had lead contamination. I have no idea how much is in there or how much could even leech out given the state the paint is in. I personally have old Corelle plates with a design but I also work in a scrapyard and live alone so I'm not a good example.

Same. We are on our second set of Corelle plates. The edges chip off in dishwasher and yes they break if you drop them. My mom has a set from at 30 or 40 years ago and they look like new. Corelle unfortunately is not good any more. The only thing nice is that they are pretty lightweight.

I bought a set of the classic white 7 yrs ago and it has served me well though I've never dropped any of it. A couple of months ago I added a set of 3 big bowls from Walmart and noticed that they were thicker and heavier. Haven't drop them either but it's kind of sad that they're thicker and heavier. Why change what's working well for so long?

dont even get me started on GE, I had a dishwasher by them and it was easily the worst thing I ever bought in my life.

cant say China has anything to with it, as I have a Hisense fridge which is great. but GE is garbage.

I remember they moved production to Mexico and shutdown US factories. That was a time when ppl stocked up on them us made batches.

I like corelle plates but they are quite cheap so it's impossible for me to spend $99 on just plates... I wish they still had the Visionsware line, it's my favorite and I would definitely buy another pot or two at discount..

Yep, they used to say 'chip and break resistant' on the bottom. Now no such claims anymore.
