- Setup a phone then turn off. (You can also do this step after activation.) You don't need to remove the pre-inserted SIM. Phone will not be activated automatically.
- Go to Tracfone website and click 'Activate'.
- Click 'Activate' under 'New Phone (One you've purchased through Tracfone)'.
- Select 'I want a new number' and enter your ZIP code. (or Keep your number and enter port information if you want to port your current phone # to Tracfone.)
- Select 'I want to use the physical SIM card' and continue.
- Enter IMEI of your phone, agree to the terms and continue.
- Activation Request Submitted. Click 'Continue' then the 'Create Account' tab to create a new account.
- Turn on your phone. If you already setup your phone, you should receive welcome text with your phone number. (optional) You can text UNLOCK to 611611 (sometimes twice) to check unlock date.
- Wait a day or two, then follow the DIY Guide [reddit.com] to activate the 2nd phone, which will have 3000 TTD and 2 years of service.
- (Optional) If you want to use an unlocked phone, buy a $1 TF BYOD SIM (TF/Verizon) and follow the DIY Guide to transfer everything over. Tracfone supports eSIM for some phone models.
- Do NOT swap SIMs. Tracfone phone IMEI and SIM ICCID are paired. Inserting the SIM that came with the phone in a different one may impact the service/unlock eligibility.
For the best use of referral codes:
1) Create a new tracfone account using phone 1 (email 1) and enter a referral code from someone else. Both you and the other person would get ~5,000 referral points each
Fine, but how to get first referral code? Will another TracFone users phone number work as a referral? My deadbeat family member didn't join rewards and can't be bothered to do so!!

Tracfone: B1 (2100), B2 (1900), B4 (1700/2100), B5 (850), B8 (900)
Unlocked: 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,12,13,17,20,26,28,32,38,39,40,41,42,43,66
I need LTE bands 3, 28, 40 & 41 so I guess I won't be able to use this unlocked phone on my trip. Speed and coverage on T-Mobile may be iffy, too, since it's missing band 12 which is important for indoor cover and network congestion.
Also phonescoop lists less bands:

Honestly, iPhones are pretty much the only ones that are relatively well supported in many countries. Even the Google Pixel has weird issues like no 5G if it's not officially sold in a certain country despite supporting that country's 5G bands.

1,2,4,5,8 are 3g bands-irrelevant
4G: LTE band 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/17/25/26/38/41/41HPUE/66/71/28 are all available.
what is the advantage for doing that?
Basically on my iphone, I use one of these plans to hold my number and I can jump around for data deals. ie I'm closing my visible and moving into total and using the dual sim option on phones now, keeping my number on one sim and using data on second sim
