Really happy with the TUF-AX4200 I setup at the in-laws last time those were on sale. Are these just a bit better? Any nuance? I (probably) won't bother with custom firmware

I have the same model. It works great comparing to the ASUS 86. It actually covers more range with stronger signal. Only drawbacks is the smaller RAM normally 70% is full when connecting to 15 devices

So this is better than the AX86U Pro?

It depends on your needs. If you have multiple devices(20+) and require advanced router features, the AX86U Pro is the better choice. However, if you simply need a reliable router with a strong signal, this one would be a better fit.

Edit: I originally accidently compared against the AX-3000, but I fixed the specs. Sorry!
The AX-86U Pro is better than this router in practically every category but it costs more.

The ASUS TUF Gaming Dual Band WiFi 6 Router (with Dual 2.5G Ports & AiMesh) at $140 is a strong value based on the following analysis:
Key Features & Benefits
  • WiFi 6 (802.11ax): Supports faster speeds, lower latency, and better performance in congested networks compared to older standards.
  • Dual 2.5G Ports: Ideal for high-speed wired connections (e.g., NAS, gaming PCs, or multi-gigabit internet plans).
  • AiMesh Compatibility: Allows seamless expansion of coverage by adding compatible ASUS routers.
  • Gaming Optimization: QoS prioritization, VPN support, and robust firmware for gaming traffic.
  • TUF Durability: Enhanced cooling and construction for reliability.
Price Comparison
  • Typical Retail Price: 150–150–180 (Amazon, Newegg, ASUS store).
$140 is below average, often seen during sales or promotions.
  • Competitors:
    • TP-Link Archer AX80 (~$150) lacks AiMesh.
    • Netgear Nighthawk AX5 (~$130) lacks 2.5G ports.
    • ASUS RT-AX82U (~$180) offers similar features at a higher price.
Who Should Buy This?
  • Gamers: QoS optimization and low latency.
  • Power Users: 2.5G ports for NAS/10Gbps internet (future-proofing).
  • Home Users Needing Coverage: AiMesh supports easy network expansion.
Considerations
  • No Tri-Band: Dual-band only (2.4GHz + 5GHz); not ideal for heavy smart-home setups.
  • Check Reviews: Minor complaints about firmware updates, but overall positive feedback on stability and performance.
  • Alternatives: Cheaper WiFi 6 routers exist, but lack 2.5G ports or gaming features.
Verdict

$140 is a great price for this router if you need gaming optimizations, 2.5G wired speeds, or plan to build an AiMesh system. It's competitively priced against similar models and offers durability and features that justify the cost. If these specs align with your needs, it's a strong buy.

I'm running a GT-AX6000 (very similar to this router but a touch higher specs) as primary with a RT-AX3000 and an old RT-AC68U (this one is just for extra coverage that isn't for anything critical). Honestly amazing that the RT-AC68U is still quite capable since it is like 10 years old.

I had been running TP-Link 4 Omada EAP225 APs, an ER605 router, and an OC200 controller which is all business level equipment. It was pretty good but I was having quirky issues with the router. It wouldn't hold DHCP reservations properly. The OC200 was slooow. I ended up switching back to Asus routers and frankly I've had less issues overall. I never have to reboot them or anything. I have wired backhauls to each of the mesh routers.

It's pretty nice that you can mesh about any asus router with another one, regardless of their age. It makes incremental upgrades much easier.

I've been thinking of replacing my aging R7000. The WiFi speeds aren't that great on the other side of my unit. I use Ethernet on that side of the house. This seems solid. Might pull the trigger!

Can you put DD-WRT or any other similar thing on it?
