I'm running a GT-AX6000 (very similar to this router but a touch higher specs) as primary with a RT-AX3000 and an old RT-AC68U (this one is just for extra coverage that isn't for anything critical). Honestly amazing that the RT-AC68U is still quite capable since it is like 10 years old.

I had been running TP-Link 4 Omada EAP225 APs, an ER605 router, and an OC200 controller which is all business level equipment. It was pretty good but I was having quirky issues with the router. It wouldn't hold DHCP reservations properly. The OC200 was slooow. I ended up switching back to Asus routers and frankly I've had less issues overall. I never have to reboot them or anything. I have wired backhauls to each of the mesh routers.

It's pretty nice that you can mesh about any asus router with another one, regardless of their age. It makes incremental upgrades much easier.
What makes this better than Ac68u which I know it is EOL but 99% ppl like me no worry about security stuff unless you work for White House. I have FiOS 500Mb with 7ppl family in 1900 sqft old house, I feel it will last me another 10yrs. Maybe by the time I upgrade, I will pay the same price for wifi7 as I paid for Ac68u(15bux).

Have had this at my old house (now rental to family) for about 6 months.

It's had zero performance issues - solid, quick router.

The only issue is the app not being able to connect on numerous occasions, requiring a call to family, and a reboot from their end (the schedule reboots also wont happen when this occurs).

The last firmware seemed to fix it, so hopefully that's a thing of the past.

Also, Asus updates for a long time - just pushed a firmware update to the RT-Ac66U B1 (the cheapest and oldest one that supports AiMesh v2) on Feb. 25th.

Lol, well if the AC68U is still working reliably with decent speeds, you're probably better off just holding off for a Wifi 7 router. I don't really notice any difference when I roam onto my old AC68U unless I run a speed test. I mostly have smart home devices connected to it which takes very little bandwidth.

I think the AC68U will go down as one of the best home routers alongside the OG Linksys WRT54G.

I'm really tempted. Just upgraded my switches to 2.5g but only devices to really take advantage are going to patch directly into them anyway. I'll probably hold out for a similar price point for Wifi7 Asus in the future to replace my 4 AC-5300s with physical backhaul

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

Couple of things:

1) This router supports OpenWRT.
2) Major security flaw if you use the 2nd and/or 3rd guest networks and want isolation between guest and main networks. Seems to be a continuous issue across different ASUS routers. Even after selecting the option to have isolation it absolutely does not work correctly. The 2nd and 3rd guest networks do not get their own VLAN/subnet like the 1st guest network does and can still communicate with main network (although this isn't the main reason why the 1st network is isolated, it's due to the routing table rules).

You can manually fix this using the ebtables routing table but without something like OpenWRT you would need to fix it each time you modify/enable/disable the guest networks or reboot the router since it will default back to the original lack of correct routing rules.

I have the same model. It works great comparing to the ASUS 86. It actually covers more range with stronger signal. Only drawbacks is the smaller RAM normally 70% is full when connecting to 15 devices
This guys is talking about AC86U instead of AX86U. AX86U and AX86U Pro are far better than TUF for everything.

Looking to replace a few TMUS re-flashed routers. If only the price was $99 each... 🤔

I caught the MSI Radix on sale for like $60 on Newegg a few months ago and so far it has been the most solid and stable router I have ever used. I planned to just use it as a stop gap until I found a deal like this, but I can't find any reason to replace it.

Just an FYI: The Flint 2 is back on sale for $118 on Amazon.

It supports OpenWRT natively without some of the underlying issues Asus OpenWRT has and it's 4x4 MIMO versus 2x2 on this TUF.

Normally, I'd prefer Asus, but the lack of Merlin really restricts it.

This AX6000 isn't 2x2, it's 4x4 MIMO as well.

Must have misread the spec sheet.

The Mediatek Filogic has several revisions and at least one is 2x2 on the 2.4Ghz channel.

Regardless, the Flint 2 has a few other things going for it, like four times as much RAM.

I still use an AC68U as an AIMesh range extender via a hardwired connection. It works great without any issues. In fact, I also have a mechanical spinning hard drive connected to it as a remote backup storage (in addition to a primary SSD connected to the main router, which is an AC86U). Note that the primary is 86, and the remote AIMesh is 68.
I agree that the AC68U is a reliable router that won't die.

The AX-86U Pro is better than this router in practically every category but it costs more.
AX86U Pro vs TUF-AX3000
Max speed
5700 Mb/s vs 2402 Mb/s
CPU
4 x 2 GHz vs 3 x 1.5 GHz
RAM
1GB vs 500MB
But this is AX6000 no AX3000
