I like saving money, but paying 1/5th the average price of a name brand equivalent for a generic brand contraption with sharp metal teeth that move at thousands of RPM is where "penny wise, pound foolish" comes to mind.

IDK. I bought a Benchmark (Kmart) compound miter cheap when they were closing stores and It's been a work horse. Probably used it over two hundred times and again this week with the original blade. Never even gave a thought that it might kill me.

I feel like quality at the low end has declined since then, but overall you're right, even a basic model should be safe when maintened properly. But there doesn't seem to be any positive reviews on this master mechanic stuff - looks like tru value store brand.

Master Mechanic is a True Value Hardware brand. It should be ok.

It depends. Price doesn't necessarily indicate safety. Many of these generic tools are the same, made in the same Chinese factories as the name brand models but with slightly different components, accessories and colors/branding.

I miss Kmart. Going to the automotive/tools section was fun. Right next to the Lawn section with lots of mowers. Good times.

i feel the same about Sears. I use to just walk down the tool section to see what red tags were sticking out for sale items. I would always find something on clearance.
