Nextorage just released 4TB versions of some of their SSDs for sale on Newegg, according to Tom's Hardware [tomshardware.com]. Prices should run through March 10, although the C version is already earlier and lower than projected, so take with a grain of salt.

Specs say these are DRAM-less, TLC, four-channel, and single-sided. (Not 100% sure about the C version, but one of the images seems to say it just has a bigger heatsink than B.)

The G LE version looks like a good competitor to Samsung's 990 Evo Plus if you want 4TB of TLC in a laptop. Most of the alternatives seem to have one catch or another, whether it's being double-sided, 8-channel, hotter, QLC bait-and-switch, pricier, weird caching behavior, etc. Nextorage was part of Sony and now Phison, which seems like a pretty reputable pedigree.

I managed to find a detailed Japanese review of the 2TB G LE [jisakuhibi.jp]. Run it through Google Translate and/or look at the benchmarks. One notable drawback: the SLC cache seems to be fixed at a relatively small 50GB (at least on the 2TB model), after which sequential writing drops from 6GB/s to 1.4 GB/s.

I've never used them, but Sony was marketing Nextorage NVME drives for PS5 storage expansion. Seems like a great price for a 4TB drive w/ heatsink that's PS5 compatible.

They started as part of Sony in 2019, then Phison bought a 49% stake in 2020 [digitimes.com], then bought the other half in 2022 [techpowerup.com]. A ton of SSD brands use Phison controllers, so they should know what they're doing. (Should.)

Plus I like how they openly specify they're using TLC. Too many brands like to keep things vague so they can do a quiet switcheroo later.

I think the B model is just an older model, and the C is newly released and cheaper (and more layers NAND chips)

Gen4 TLC DRAM-less M.2 drives can be had at around $200. The price is meh.

Point some my way. It feels like every time I research a model, I find some devil lurking in the details. Like, just now I looked up a review of the TeamGroup MP44 [tomshardware.com] to refresh my memory, and it seemed promising, but then someone left a comment that their unit came with a different controller and flash than what was reviewed, meaning it could behave totally differently from what I just read. And apparently this is normal for TeamGroup. How am I supposed to buy a mystery meat like that?

How about the Lexar NM790? Seems to be par with the Nextorage or better? It's not on sale though unfortunately, and certainly isn't at around $200.

Yeah, it looks like the current pricing is the only drawback with that one. Sucks that it's way more expensive now than when it launched. It was frequently dipping below $200 in 2023.

The 4TB Corsair MP600 Elite is currently down to $240 on Newegg [newegg.com].

Notably, the 2TB version used the same controller and flash as the Nextorage 2TB, with the same ~50GB cache behavior in a Tom's Hardware review [tomshardware.com]. So it's possible the 4TB versions are comparable, in which case $240 is better than $250. Plus, well, Corsair is a better-known brand.

Interesting I found this and this drive was in my consideration bc the product page says:
"In addition, up to 2GB* of DDR4 DRAM is installed to achieve both high speed and stability."

Since the actual product webpage says dramless kinda makes this meh. Only pro I see now is TBW is higher than the 990 evo plus, which was the same price until a few days ago. It was yesterdays shell shocker and stayed the same price 😂

I have a $60 credit to Newegg expiring in a few days and wanted a reliable 4tb drive, any suggestions?
