I ended up going with a pair of Energy Veritas V2.0Ri's that I already had on hand, because comparing to everything I demoed, they were AWESOME. But if I didn't have these, and I couldn't find Event Opal monitors (arguably the best ever made, but I have been looking for 10 years and haven't seen a pair for under like $4k, they stopped making them
If you have a Guitar center near you, they have a bunch of these on display to demo, and you can bring your own source(s) too... best way to see what you like without going through buying, demoing, and returning.
This is a good deal at this price, i would buy these IMMEDIATELY for $200/pair. There's nothing this cheap that will compete with these at all. I actually have a set of presonus monitors on my desk as rinky dink gaming speakers that i absolutely love for that.
Would i use these for serious monitoring or anything? no. But these would kick ass for a bedroom or small living room vinyl setup, monster desktop speakers for gaming, bedroom DJ setup, etc.
The cheapest monitors Worth Using As Monitors are the Kali audio IN series, or yea, as someone else mentioned, the yamaha HS. Personally i find the yamahas a little "harsh" and fatiguing, but i like how you can crank them without them sounding bad.
The presonus speakers do everything the, for example, KRKs do at a price that reflects what those should actually cost. They're Fun, not super serious. And i personally think these will be just as good as any of the audioengine/etc Not Good but priced like it speakers out there. I also absolutely, without a doubt, would buy these as a first set of monitors to just make tracks in ableton/etc on. You don't need Super Good monitors for that, or even like necessarily decent ones! Pay any of the numerous sites online to master your tracks if you make something you're proud of.
For everyone asking, these do appear to be near-field as with all the presonus models i've seen so far. Only the biggest cheap monitors(IE krk rokit 10) are "midfield", at least on paper. i do believe these would perform perfectly fine in a mid-field setup as "fun" speakers though. Buy these! spend your extra money on room treatments(boxes/traps, not the stupid peel and stick foam), or even just putting a rug up on a wall and filling your room with stuff so it isn't an echo-y box.

I appreciate your input. These are not for music listening. The A/B I talked about in my comments is for A/Bing mixes on different sized/quality speakers. Just like you'd A/B stuff on earbuds, on-ears, over-ears, and a pair of sh*tbox speakers. You want your mix sounding decent on a wide range of what the average consumer will be using.
I am using a pair of Bowers and Wilkins 706 S3's for my office setup but I want more bass extension. Do you think these would be better.
As for proper DJ speakers, they're designed to play loud, loud, loud.
These Eris are trash.

If you want your mix to sound good on different speakers, use speakers with a flat response then run a high pass filter at 200 Hz, 150Hz, 100Hz, 80Hz, and 40Hz, which is effectively like listening on different quality speakers. If the song still sounds fine with all the bass removed, it'll be fine on most setups. It's not worth chasing every possible frequency response out there. That's impossible. Some speakers boost the mids. Some cut them out. Some have rising frequency response. Some have falling. There's no way to predict.
I just read a reddit post by a guy who complained that his mix sounded great on his headphones but terrible everywhere else. Well, his chosen headphones had a rollercoaster of frequency response, so no surprise.
Audio reproduction is a science.
The good news is, a great song can be fun on a terrible stereo.

It's always worth looking at thrift stores if you're on a budget. I've found KEF C30s for $9, mid 2000s Marantz receivers for $12, Boston Acoustics and Bose (yeah I know) bookshelfs for $15, M-Audio bx5 studio monitors for $10 (needed output caps), etc. I give them to people if I don't need them. I wish I hadn't given my brother those KEFs though, lol, they were my best find. Just make sure to always check the condition of the cones, power on the receiver etc before you buy. Only got burnt once on some $3 jbl surrounds.
While it's not a separate subwoofer this is probably as good as it gets to combined bass and tremble, in terms of price too, no brainer for $100 as they're $300 each. Unbeatable price, tho if you have money just laying around obviously you could go with a subwoofer on it's own and a whole surround set of speakers (maybe even 4x presonus 5" rather than this 8) but again if you have money you might as well throw it at even less bang for buck brands where you won't even notice the difference at that point Lol

The presonus products with bad reviews are mostly the 3/4/5in models with an amp in one speaker, that basically compete with things like the m-audio av40's and other REALLY cheap monitors like the rockvilles. And they're probably the best of those super-cheapo ones, and fine as like, computer speakers. Their independently powered monitors are a better product, and i've demo'd several of them. One local music shop actually uses them to demo their synths, drum machines, etc. and they sound quite solid. Again, focus on the value for $100 each, not in comparison with like, $400 yamahas or something.
