I ended up going with a pair of Energy Veritas V2.0Ri's that I already had on hand, because comparing to everything I demoed, they were AWESOME. But if I didn't have these, and I couldn't find Event Opal monitors (arguably the best ever made, but I have been looking for 10 years and haven't seen a pair for under like $4k, they stopped making them
If you have a Guitar center near you, they have a bunch of these on display to demo, and you can bring your own source(s) too... best way to see what you like without going through buying, demoing, and returning.
This is a good deal at this price, i would buy these IMMEDIATELY for $200/pair. There's nothing this cheap that will compete with these at all. I actually have a set of presonus monitors on my desk as rinky dink gaming speakers that i absolutely love for that.
Would i use these for serious monitoring or anything? no. But these would kick ass for a bedroom or small living room vinyl setup, monster desktop speakers for gaming, bedroom DJ setup, etc.
The cheapest monitors Worth Using As Monitors are the Kali audio IN series, or yea, as someone else mentioned, the yamaha HS. Personally i find the yamahas a little "harsh" and fatiguing, but i like how you can crank them without them sounding bad.
The presonus speakers do everything the, for example, KRKs do at a price that reflects what those should actually cost. They're Fun, not super serious. And i personally think these will be just as good as any of the audioengine/etc Not Good but priced like it speakers out there. I also absolutely, without a doubt, would buy these as a first set of monitors to just make tracks in ableton/etc on. You don't need Super Good monitors for that, or even like necessarily decent ones! Pay any of the numerous sites online to master your tracks if you make something you're proud of.
For everyone asking, these do appear to be near-field as with all the presonus models i've seen so far. Only the biggest cheap monitors(IE krk rokit 10) are "midfield", at least on paper. i do believe these would perform perfectly fine in a mid-field setup as "fun" speakers though. Buy these! spend your extra money on room treatments(boxes/traps, not the stupid peel and stick foam), or even just putting a rug up on a wall and filling your room with stuff so it isn't an echo-y box.

The presonus products with bad reviews are mostly the 3/4/5in models with an amp in one speaker, that basically compete with things like the m-audio av40's and other REALLY cheap monitors like the rockvilles. And they're probably the best of those super-cheapo ones, and fine as like, computer speakers. Their independently powered monitors are a better product, and i've demo'd several of them. One local music shop actually uses them to demo their synths, drum machines, etc. and they sound quite solid. Again, focus on the value for $100 each, not in comparison with like, $400 yamahas or something.

Still, $200/pair for some 8 inch coaxials is kind of a crazy deal.
Regardless of how good these speakers are/aren't, there's one dude who has some sort of axe to grind and crapped all over the thread by posting ~25 comments so far (!!). We get it man, you think Presonus sucks. Thing is, the signal-to-noise ratio of some crappy speakers sold off the back of a truck is vastly superior to your output.

The 3.5 first gen no longer work. No sound comes out.
The 4.5 still work as great a day 1.
For the price they are good for music and causal listening.
They are in no way replacement for proper studio monitors. They are not marketed as such, that that's fine. But some people see it and think "studio monitors".
But for $100 per speaker and $200 per pair. I imagine the causal market would say it's pricey and can get some decent speakers for less.
Keep in mind though, these are 8 in woofers
The nice thing about speakers and amps even is that if what you get satisfies your use cases (space, usage, etc.) and you enjoy the sound, they can last a loooong time, and you don't have to upgrade every year to get brighter/faster screen, more RAM, faster CPU or whatever obsolesense is associated with things like PCs and phones, so dated experience can still be useful. I still have my Energy Veritas 2.8 speakers driven by Aragon 8008BB amp both from the late 90s as my mains for my HT setup(I bought everything used like 15 years ago), and they are still AWESOME. So imho, for speakers / monitors the latest and greatest isn't necessary to be happy with what you get, and if you live near a metro area, some amazing deals can be had on Facebook marketplace or wherever for those shopping with a certain budget that missed this $200 set of speakers. Unlike buying a 10 year old Android phone which is basically worthless...
