Just a reminder for those of you who aren't too PC savvy:
You can only use as much RAM as your motherboard can take. If the board has a 32 gig max then this will do nothing after the 32 gigs that it can use.
You can check the specifications of your motherboard on Google. If you don't know what it is or how to get the model number so you then search *model XYZ motherboard specs" then you can Google that too.

Apple is evil.Sadly, MS has been learning from it.
All companies do this mess. Save a nickel on production, make a product obsolete sooner so that we have to buy a new one. Tale as old as time and in no way limited to just Apple and Microsoft.

many miniPC & NUCs will keep supporting RAM module for a long time. (of course except Mac mini LOL)

If anything, Microsoft has done much worse to negatively impact consumers than Apple ever has. Apple didn't create a cartel to dominate home and work computer markets.
Call MS a cartel, Apple a walled garden... its just business baby!

A little bit of a forced issue by AMD and Intel right now. They both want to have higher memory speeds for their AI NPU chips they are building into their AI based processors. So as far as I understand any of those laptop processors will always have soldered RAM as it allows the traces to be much shorter and closer to the CPU itself for 8000+Mhz speeds. The tech isn't there to allow for that fast of memory speeds yet without soldering it is my understanding.

Edit: I should add, I don't support soldered RAM nor do I think that type of memory speed is actually necessary for AI stuff to work properly if that is what your use case is for.

to be honest, when you look at what kind of updates these tech companies pushed out every year, you will find out it's almost like nothing. I have my Samsung note 9 which is still working fine. New Samsung phone and new Andorid OS didn't really change that much for years so it's really have no big reason to upgrade. However, the lack of security update which probably eventually force me to buy a new phone and contribute to more unnecessary e-waste soon.

There are some mini PCs that can use DDR5 SO-DIMMs. But the industry is in a state of transition right now. There's the competing (LP)CAMM standard that will completely replace SO-DIMMs during the DDR6 generation, and lots of soldered memory, even for big amounts like 128 GB for Strix Halo.

You just have to look it up case by case. But here's an example: Minisforum UM790 Pro

Wrong thread.

It's necessarily going to continue for performance reasons. At 6000-6400mhz or so it becomes difficult to reliably use SODIMM because the additional trace length from the memory controller and additional resistance of the socketed connection introduces timing errors. That's why Dell designed CAMM modules, but they're more expensive and take up more board space, so I'm not sure how much adoption they'll get.
