  • The first book in the acclaimed, New York Times best-selling trilogy, Wool is the story of mankind clawing for survival. The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo.
  • But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.
  • After the previous sheriff leaves the silo in a terrifying ritual, Juliette, a mechanic from the down deep, is suddenly and inexplicably promoted to the head of law enforcement. With newfound power and with little regard for the customs she is supposed to abide, Juliette uncovers hints of a sinister conspiracy. Tugging this thread may uncover the truth . . . or it could kill every last human alive.

If you're looking for a place to buy other than Amazon, the author's website has the books on sale DRM free. Including the sequels in Shift and Dust

I would argue some of the changes were large. At times I preferred the TV series. Though they definitely broke the realism of the solo in the TV series.

Not going to spoil anything for either. But it takes a long time to descend from IT to mechanical. I feel the director forgot this fact.

Terrific book. They've made some minor changes for the tv series but overall they're pretty close so far. Definitely recommend at this price.

Well, gee, when I read this book a few years ago I thought it was called "Wool"--but according to Amazon, its real title is:

Wool: The Inspiration for Silo Seasons One and Two—A Heart-Pounding Thriller of Survival and Betrayal in a Dystopian World of Darkness

as a fan of the books...i feel you, but i think silo fits better for a tv show trying to get an audience. and that is way more relevant than the book series name, imo.
i havent watched the series, apple tv is like the only sub i dont have but ill pick it up eventually.
anyway, great scifi book series for anyone looking at this - and HH has a book of short stories that is also really good "Machine Learning- New and Collected Stories"

Thumbs up on this one.
Agree that naming the TV series "Silo" was definitely a superior marketing term, and also a better/clearer description for the series as a whole.
I did find novels two and three to be a bit of a slog with a lot of repetition. And even though I read them over a short period, I still found myself forgetting relevant details from one to the next (with at least one not very bright lead). Basically, a modest thumbs-down on books 2&3 (though I expect TV series watchers who buy this one will probably continue with the rest vs. waiting the 1-2 years for the TV version to play out).

Thought it was crazy how many days it took to go up and down in the book too.... Also thought it was lame they made Walker a female so they could have their mandatory gay character.
I feel like the Walker actress has nailed the part though. The relationship isn't done poorly either where they just ram the agenda down your throat. She is a character that has relationships just like everyone else it just happens to be with another lady.

Agreed on both points. She nailed the part.

More than minor changes. And for the best. IMO the Show is better than the book, and that rarely happens.

I dont care about any of that. What I didnt' like was that they changed the character so completely that the new version of Walk actually goes out of her place without any issue. The book version would clearly have a heart attack. I also wish the TV show had included the Radio communications between silos.

That being said, IMO the book is clearly a beta version and the show is the release candidate.

Silo is a better name for what it is, definitely. I think the "Wool" name made sense for the original chapter, before it expanded into the 5 Wool volumes and the subsequent stuff in that universe. They'll all worth reading IMO (and I think his other stuff is solid too.
