Note that 'regular' fit is really for an average American... who is overweight by 10s of pounds. The so-called 'slim fit' is probably right for a typical body at a healthy weight. People who are legitimately skinny (not just being called skinny by their friendly neighborhood Gravy Seals) can't hardly find off the shelf clothes that fit.
Modern/tailored fit is going to hide some extra pounds.
If you aren't sure, try to get to a store where you can try on sizes and fits with no pressure until you figure it out. It doesn't have to be Macy's, could be a Kohl's or such. Brands will vary but for sized (not S, M, L, like 42L) they should be close so once you know your size+fit you can order online with some confidence.
