When I moved into my home around 8 years ago, it was infested with ants and nothing commonly available in retail worked. Only Taurus SC eliminated the critters.
Just respect the power of Taurus SC and you will be amazed at the results. (Wear gloves, a N95 mask, eye protection, and never spray on a windy day or indoors. Also, be careful not to spray near/around flowering plants as it will kill bee colonies.)
Taurus SC is expensive initially, but it lasts you at least 5 years if you spray the outside perimeter of a 1,500 SQFT home in the spring and fall.
For indoor use, I would recommend Diatomaceous Earth [amazon.com]. It's a non-toxic mechanical killer, meaning that it cuts up the exoskeletons of insects and dries them up/kills them. This post on Reddit [reddit.com] explains pretty well how it functions and how effective it is.
Just place the Diatomaceous Earth under and behind all your furniture and inside all cracks and entry points where insects might enter your home. If the powder remains dry, Diatomaceous Earth will last for years, if not decades, and continue being an effective, non-toxic insect killer.
Just don't vacuum or sweep the powder if you're not using a strong quality HEPA filter on your vacuum and wearing a N95 mask, as it can cause throat and nose irritation if breathed in. Sheesh, quite a long post; perhaps I'm trying too hard here...
