I've seen a lot of reports about Boox devices randomly breaking while sitting unused on tables and then support claims it was user caused damage and won't warranty them. I don't think I would consider buying one of these unless they offer a warranty that covered accidental damage, and then I'd factor that in to the price. There have been a lot of people looking to buy ereaders recently with Amazon's changes, and Boox's quality control and predatory warranty gateways seems to be hindering their customer adoption rate.

Same.. do some research on reddit. I bailed on Boox after seeing an abnormal amount of these stories

thought this would be too small to be an ebook reader, but the regular Kindle is 6". so the screen is about the same size.

I assume it's not subject to tariffs yet?
I thought that the seller/shipper pays the tariffs. They can pass that cost along to the customer. But it would be built in to the cost of the total purchase.

In other words, you're not going to get a surprise tariff bill after you've already made the purchase. Someone correct me if I'm wrong and this is changing.

All reviews have said there's no noticable difference between the two FWIW. Good deal imo. I have and love the Palma.

Huh! Thank you for sharing this. I'd been wanting one of these things, but not if there's a significant chance of failure not covered by warranty.

My 5-year-old Kobo Clara HD with customized software is still going strong 🤓

Exactly this. Lots of reports on reddit. Just search "screen" on r/Onyx_Boox.

Meanwhile I have multiple kindle devices that that last over 5 years and still refuse to die.

There are tons of reports like this all over. I really like the form factor but wouldn't touch any of their products unless they were basically giving it away.

Just depends. Package reaches here and gets a custom check. During this check if any taxes or duties (the tariff) need to be paid, it is up to the receiver to pay it. The carrier would then get a hold of you to pay it.

edit: I am not sure with the tariffs on and tariffs off again, rinse and repeat. But normally items from China under $800 did not need to pay a fee, this is something that is or set to be removed. The new minimum custom fee to be added from packages from China is supposed to be $32.71 + tariff. So once everything is officially "set" anything from China, even a $1 item will have a $31.71 + tariff to pay to get the package. I could be mistaken but I have been keeping tabs on it for work and this is how I understand it.

Boox is notorious for this kind of thing. If you insist on buying it for whatever reason, get it from a US seller with a decent reputation for customer service, like Amazon, and pay for it with a credit card that gives you some kind of mobile device protection. If/when it breaks out of the blue, try Amazon and if that fails just let your credit card company duke it out with them. That's what you pay them for.

If I wanted an e-reader, I would look to Kobo. Although to my surprise B&N Nook [wikipedia.org] is still being made.
