Assuming we're not going to get $20 deal this year or deal with gift card. Might hold out for another week or two, but starting not too feel optimistic

After playing the H&R/Newegg pricing games for the past 3-4 years and waiting for a better deal to come this year, I finally gave up and went to FreeTaxUSA. Most likely will never go back to H&R.

FTUsa cost me $15 total for federal and state - and unlike H*R, there was no additional state e-file fees (my situation includes W2, stock sale, retirement, HSA's, etc.). Interface is just as intuitive as H&R or TurboTax.

Also considering going to FTUsa. After using TurbTax for 8 yrs then switching to HRB for the last 12 yrs, I tried FTUsa to prep a family member's basic return and compare to HRB. I was impressed w/ FTUsa's fed'l interface and thought FTUsa's help section to be much better than both HRB and TT. IMHO HRB and TT's user interface has deteriorated and if you have a question, you are better off googling the tax question to the IRS or a major tax reference source rather than attempting to hit the built-in HRB or TT help function which over the past 10 yrs will no longer provide much insight or guidance to your needed topic.

Privacy appears to be concern with practically all the commercial providers. Probably best, if permitted, to use the respective jurisdiction's (IRS, State or Local) online/direct file service.
FWIW, if you don't want to deal w/ NewEgg, Best Buy has the digital HRB for $30

When is Amazon going to start offering deals? Probably the day after my no-rush credits expire.

The data they get from many of us is probably worth a lot to them. They are better off giving this away for free in April than have user buy another software.
Nonsense.

I just discovered Direct File. I appears to be an IRS program that allows free federal and state filing if you live in one of 25 states that are currently supported, and meet other criteria.

https://directfile.irs.gov/
https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-di...e-for-free

I don't really know anything about it, but seems legit and worth exploring.

If anyone here has used it before, please share about your experience with it.

I don't know about others. I don't fall into categories where filing would be free. In my personal case I would have to pay $15 for freetaxusa to e-file state.
H&R Block is playing pricing games every year. Seems like this year they don't have plans to make the price reasonable ($15 range). Also, the only way to file state with H&R Block for reasonable price is to print and mail it, that adds hassle and postal fees to price.

Anyway, that is the reason I go to freetaxusa this year after using H&R Block for 10+ years. I remember the days when we could download CD, change xml file and hack it to be free lol.

Filing taxes should not be this complicated unless you're a high income earner with loads of deductions. The government/IRS should send you a letter with your tax and if you're happy with it there's no further action needed. That's how other First World Developed countries do it. Unfortunately, tax software makers spending millions lobbying will make sure it never happens in this country.
