Because it's a lever on side, all presses will do that. You're supposed to turn the tortilla 180° in the press and lightly press it again to even it out.

Not necessarily..I have been using this presser to make tortillas at home. Tortillas come out like medium in size but "even" at all the edges! I never turn the tortillas. I use regular homemade dough to make them.
