This is actually preferable in some use cases. My kitchen counter needs more than two plugs and looks silly with a corded power strip.

I bought something similar from this brand a few months ago and noticed that there was no reset button. There was a surge and it knocked out all 110v outlets. The USB ports continued to work though. I ended up returning my item.

Does anyone know if there's a way to reset this device?

Surge protectors are single use. Once they reach their limit, get a new one.

Other than literally losing access to an open receptacle, is there a problem with this? Is there any electrical benefit to having access to the other receptacle? For example, does the entire wall unit support high wattage more safely if it is split across to both receptacles instead of just one?

I didn't think there was, but I could be wrong. Otherwise, it seems fine for this to cover both. You do lose a receptacle, but overall, I think it looks more balanced. Plus, the additional peg going in the lower receptacle gives it a bit more support if installing in a Decora outlet.

I have the American version of this outlet extender [amazon.com]. It only covers one of the wall receptacles. But it does pull out of the wall much easier than I'd like. And overall, I think it looks worse than something that covers the whole outlet.

Unplug from the wall, then plug it back.

No. None of these USB wall surge protectors, regardless of manufacturer, seem to have a reset button. If you have a surge, it'll protect you but unit will no longer work. Basically, it's like a sophisticated fuse that you can't replace. I have 3 models from other manufacturers and will probably buy this one as well because of the higher current charging.

I have an older model that does have a resetable circuit breaker switch for overloads. But it doesn't have surge protection or USB outlets.

For the vast majority of people, it's a non-issue since they don't get surges. As a lifelong New Yorker, for example, I've never had an unplanned surge affect my electronics (that I know of). Any surges were caused by me, e.g. by running a drill or paper shredder on the same line.

Bought one last year for my kid's apartment since her room only had one outlet in the area where a desk would make sense. Used it to connect her desktop PC, two monitors, desk lamp, laptop charger, and wireless phone charger (using the USB-C port). Since this outlet is near her closet, the side-facing outlets are very helpful to keep cords against the wall/floorboard--otherwise cords sticking too far out from the wall can be a tripping hazard.

Also bought another one for the apartment's living room for their TV and Switch--again, because that outlet is right next to her roommate's bedroom door.

Nothing has blown up or caught fire yet, so it's probably okay.

Bought ones from Beshon or Hanycony with PD 20W. Their sides are two prongs outlet which are used for almost small electric things than the bulky 3 prongs outlet.
