What I did with my Mac mini was get an OWC Thunderbolt enclosure and drop a 4TB WD Black NVME in it. Spent about $350 which was way cheaper than adding storage with Apple's prices.
Wow that beefy of a computer should come with a 2TB SSD! At least 1TB base.
Great deal for the rest of the machine though!
A 14" MacBook Pro with the same M4 Max (and 1TB storage, minimum storage for the MBP with this chip) goes for $3,200 at Apple, just for reference.

The MBP has the screen, keyboard, trackpad, and portability (edit- and 512GB of additional storage), but this Studio gives you a few extra ports (including USB-A and 10Gb Ethernet) and is almost half the price.

Yeah. I already got an H200 server. But still tempted to get the M4 Ultra. Such an efficient GenAI powerhouse on your desktop!
There is no Studio with M4 Ultra; only M3 Ultra

Even if you could use student discount, this price is still $100 less. Now, if we could get the Studio Display down below $1000 mark...

Is this worth 3.5 base Mac minis? That is way more cores and ram etc. Much less practical though Smilie still someone should make a Mac mini dock which allows you to use several of them as a "single" machine.

512gb in 2025 is like iphone with 8gb base storage. what a shame. it probably costs apple maybe $10 or $20 for 1TB storage. but hey, you willl pay $400+ for upgrade. cuz apple knows what's best for you.

Having trouble getting Best Buy to price match. There's only one Microcenter store with stock left (Columbus, OH). Any tips?

May just have to wait and see if they offer more stock or make it available again. Better deal than educational discount.

Yeah! I agree in principle.

However a lot of folks who need this much power are also going to be using external or cloud storage solutions for their media and only keep a few apps on the boot drive.

It depends on what games you play. There are >20,000 games on Steam that work on macOS: https://store.steampowered.com/macos

Plus, there are ways to run many more games through Crossover or similar tools.

Plenty of benchmark videos here: https://www.youtube.com/@Andytizer

I wouldn't buy a Mac for gaming, but a Mac like this M4 Max Studio would be able to handle tons of games.

M4 Max has 15-18 tflops of GPU compute, making it about 25% MORE powerful than a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, so compatibility aside, plenty of power. Smilie

Genuinely curious, can we use this as a headless server that can have cron jobs scheduled? My MacBook Pro M1 Max would happily sleep with inactivity even after using insomnia to try to wake it.
My Raspberry PI does an amazing job, why not these beefy Macs?

There are ways to essentially do that: https://x.com/marclanders/status/...2276665701

Macs easily run cron jobs (although Apple encourages launchd instead). People use them headless all the time. I used to run a Mac mini headless and then would ssh or screen share in as needed. Discussion here (about Mini but someone mentions Studio): https://talk.macpowerusers.com/t/...less/39519

And here is a brief discussion about the possible benefits of launchd: https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/co...r_launchd/

I got them to match yesterday March 17, when only Columbus had it in stock. It depends on the rep. I had to try 2 times.

FWIW, I was able to have BH price match a Mini M4 Pro 24/512 and paid with my payboo card.

is it possible to add more hard drive space?
Look up BASEQI UHS-II, it's a flush sd card reader. I have one of in my Macbook Pro along with a 1tb SD card and it fits so that it's flush and looks like it's part of the hardware.
