I paid a dollar for this book, I still thought it was too much. repeats the same idea over and over with no clear message its literally like this.
YOU HAVE TO FACE THE OBSTACLE HEAD ON!
YOU HAVE TO GO AROUND THE OBSTACLE!
YOU MUST OUTSMART WITH THE OBSTACLE!
YOU MUST STARE DOWN THE OBSTACLE!
SOMETIMES HAVE TO PLAY AROUND THE OBSTACLE!
PLAY COY WITH THE OBSTACLE
"inserts random examples" then repeat with no call to action or any steps.
this book could have easily been a blog post. just save yourself the money and read the free sample on amazon.

It's not a self help book, it is a philosophy book, specifically Stoicism. Many philosophy books are either really dry or really esoteric. Holiday's writing is very readable. I agree with what some folks here have pointed out as conflicting concepts, but philosophy is more about adjusting your own as you accumulate more knowledge and experience, so I find those conflicts acceptable, if sometimes annoying.

I do not like his videos but have enjoyed a few of his books, including this one. YMMV

I vaguely recall a video where he said he was going through the notecards from when he wrote the book. He said he was going to add some that didn't make the cut the first time.

Was thinking about getting it with all those great reviews it has... but no call to action or steps?! Doesn't pretty much doesn't tell you what you should do or how to use/apply the information in this book? idk now.

Had the exact same experience.

It's basically a book on stoicism, just like countless other books on it. Pretty much can be summarized as "don't let things bother you, and you won't be bothered".

Didn't need 200 pages to keep repeating the same message.

The book is one in a series. My personal thinking is that it is a good way to learn about Stoicism with a current viewpoint. If you are looking for something with more actionable recommendations and easy to mentally digest, consider The Daily Stoic by the same author. If you're on a budget, sign up for Bookbub emails and put it on your wish list. It comes up once or twice a year at a similar discount.
