From what I remember the thermal paste is already applied to the bundled cooler.
Is the Cooler master paste much better? Should one just scrape off the included paste and use the cooler master paste? It only gets 3 stars from reviews.

What's a good GPU to pair with this, looking to upgrade my son's system.
As i did with my son, I would base that decision on a few things. One being age range. What he uses it for. What display/resolution/refresh.

What gpu and monitor does he have now?

Either of these will require you to enable the XMP profile in the BIOS to get the rated speed.
If the mobo and cpu support up to 3200, would 3600 even show up in the xmp?

It looks like the motherboard supports higher than 3200 on at least some CPUs so enabling the XMP profile will set it to 3600. If it fails to post it'll revert back to the default speed and you can set it to 3200 manually.

If you want to potentially avoid any manual config and just enable XMP and go then stick with 3200.

There is virtually no difference between 3600 CL16 and 3200 CL18.

Yeah I recall from my last AMD build that the included cooler had thermal paste applied, so it's a bit odd IMO that they include a stand alone tube of it in this bundle. I personally wouldn't bother removing/replacing the pre-applied paste from the bundled cooler.

I think the paste tube included with the deal primarily adds value for Newegg as a retail bundling strategy (creating perceived value, moving excess stock, etc.). For the end user, the paste is likely only to provide functional benefit with a more capable third party cooler. Perhaps there are some interesting tests out there with stock coolers, but although the AMD stock cooler is surprisingly capable it's probably still the biggest limiting factor if you're trying to get every bit of possible performance out of this CPU.

Good luck!

This is the best question to ask. One possible answer is simply to transfer the existing GPU(!).

Good luck!

I build and sell PC's as a side hustle and I often pair this type of combo with an AMD Radeon RX 5700XT. This performs similarly to an RTX 3060 or rx 6600XT and can be found for around $150 on eBay or Mercari.

This was a good highlight for my mention about an existing card being good enough: if the kid has a 1080Ti or 2070 in their rig, then unless there's a elevated concern around power consumption or games support the answer is probably keep on truckin'.

The models you mention underscore that newest isn't always necessary/best.

Good luck!

I want to build a budget pc for my kids to play games I grew up with in the 90s (Warcraft, Half-Life, Tie Fighter etc). Any recommendations for budget GPU to pair with this?

Also, I'm talking to ChatGPT about the build and it keeps saying I need to be aware that the motherboard might need some kind of "bios update" to support Ryzen 5000 series CPUs, and that if these don't sheep with the update it won't boot without first installing an older CPU and doing the update first...any guidance on whether this is a real concern??

I've experienced this issue, but the last time it occurred for me (circa late 2023/early 2024) the speed bump was easily overcome by loading the BIOS update onto a USB stick. Not sure about ASRock, but so many motherboard BIOS are able to circumvent even this kind of critical compatibility issue. Nothing like back in the day when having a compatible CPU laying around was a key step in the process.

I'll pop back in here later in the week to report on my own experience with this specific combo.

Good luck!
Jon

You can find a used RTX 3060 or 3060 Ti in the range of $200-250 or if you want something new then AMD is a better value at this price range with maybe an RX 6600 XT or RX 7600
99% of 3060's sell for over $250.
