I'm assuming this has plastic tubing on the inside for the hot water? Trying to limit my exposure of plastic with hot water lately so trying to be more informed before purchases.

I side-graded from the Breville Barista express (8 years old) to this one which was given to me as an unsolicited gift. I've tried them both side by side and I think I am pretty representative of your average user.

The Breville was really hard to get decent espresso out of at first, and by decent espresso I am just saying that it is comparable enough to a coffee shop for me to not have the daily desire to skip it and go out and get a $5 latte. Once I bought fresh beans from a roaster that were under 1 month old I got it humming pretty well. It was a pain to figure out grind size, tamping pressure, etc to the point where I went through a couple pounds of beans before I got there. I could never quite get the steam wand to produce quality frothed milk, so we ended up buying a separate frother for that purpose. Can't say whether that is user error or the machine, but either way it's not easy.

I've used the Ninja with the same bean type, and it took way more pulls than the 3 they advertised to get it dialed in, but far less than the 1lb+ it took on the Breville. I'm a big fan of the cold-pressed for iced coffee and the milk frother system is top notch. Perfect milk every time, including cold foam, with no learning curve at all since it's all automated.

Overall I still think the Breville slightly outperforms the Ninja in espresso quality but the user-friendly features of the Ninja and the fact that it also replaced drip coffee for the older generation when they visit pushed it over the edge for me. I have now retired the Breville.

Same as previous FP but retail price and GC both went up $50, so a bit more tax. https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/1062259

I was excited to receive this, but I realized that while the bean grinding part is still somewhat manual, I have to transfer the grounds via the portafilter. I enjoy doing this from time to time, but is the process too much for my wife at 6am daily. . .Is there a comparable espresso machine in the same price range that is truly automatic (no need to use portafilter).
Look into super automatic machines

For a decent one he probably needs to spend closer to 1k though. So not in this price point.

That's a lot wasted to dial in your machine! You would waste 1lb + every time you buy new beans?

I dont know how the super automatics are now, but yes, they are easier to use day to day, but the quality's not the same. You may be limited to what type of beans you can use (oily is usually a no because it will clog), and you have to clean the brew group once a week or so and deep clean once a month.

I have this. Overall, I'm satisfied. It does a lot of things and I don't know if it does anything particularly well, but unless you try to find faults, I think it's a good machine and you'll be satisfied. I really like the cold press and over ice function as well as espresso. I think I'll use the first two functions more and more as the weather gets warmer.
You're getting a jack of all trades at around $500 level. It's not going to make the best of anything you've had in your life. For me, it makes a decent enough of what I want, even if what I want changes every day. $1000+ machines can't say that, unless you have like 4 of them.

I think it was a combo of learning curve and coffee beans. I found that the "espresso" pressure range on the BBE was way too wide and I only got good espresso when the dial pointed straight up. With that knowledge I think it would be less but still very trial and error focused.

I generally ignore that espresso dial. I usually go by weight, output, and time. I also make sure it is infused properly before it starts fully extracting. Do you weigh your beans or do you just use the hopper? It's a process, lol!

Just got the email regarding the Costco Gift Card. I did get the full $150 as stated at the time of placing the order.

And as far as the machine is concerned, I am loving it so far. Especially the auto froth feature. I just start the expresso brew and press the froth button to queue it up and then walk away. When I return a few minutes later, the brew and the froth are ready.

BTW, it will do the cold brew and cold froth at the same time.
