I saw the Cobalt Star PS5 slim deal posted a few weeks back for $425 and put off buying it as my son already has the original PS5 and a second was not a must have.

Well, I was checking out Sam's to see if they came back in stock. I was surprised to see an original PS5 spiderman 2 bundle available for $360. I jumped on it and it should be here Friday.

As mentioned in OP, original PS5, not slim. It's OOS already so they must have only had a few but I bought online with my plus membership. Order status is in progress w a Friday delivery date.

Depending on the exact time this was made & released, it is likely one of the first revised OG PS5s (v1 controller, different cooling fans used, redesigned internally to reduce footprint of heatsink and reduced amount of metal used). I don't think they changed the thermal paste used internally until the 3rd or 4th iteration. These ones last best when set horizontally. The newer fat PS5s were the ones they made better to have vertical (less metal made the difference after all).

I thought it was the original PS5 and tried finding a sku on Sam's but couldn't. I googled this bundle and it looks like it came out in Nov 2023 originally and is the slim edition. I actually am glad if it is. Looking through reviews on Sam's indicate it is the slim version as well. Someone wrote one star because they were wanting a fat PS5 and claimed false advertising 🤷 ♂️

Meaning less metal in the first revisions caused the issue or less metal in the later revisions solved the problem? How about the original fat? Does that still have the problem?

PS5 have always really been designed to be positioned horizontally due to issues with the disk drive in the long-term. I think they've made the slims more with vertical positioning in mind.

PS5 was the first they really went after doing it during the first few revisions. The less metal in a fat PS5 the better it can "release" the heat from its whole layout WHEN IT'S VERTICAL. The fans do a lot of the overall work and that's why it's important to have space around the console (and to keep cleaning that space...with the PS5 off...to reduce the circulating dust).

However vertically, the more metal, the longer the heat stays in the console and it's not even needed as much when vertical as the side normally on the bottom now can air cool also. So they fixed it over revisions and most importantly they changed a power supply at some point to reduce more heat.

I still prefer my PlayStations horizontally positioned. From the past I know it's important to have them last as long as possible and retain value I still have my og PS3 with no issues. The PS4 on the other hand...I think I went through 5 of them before Sony said no more post purchase warranty. I still have a PS 3D Display too. It works fine, just runs hot. I leave a lot of my stuff on 24/7 also but I have them on battery backups to prevent issues.

It just came today and the fat version. I would have preferred the slim just for the extra storage. Have not opened it yet but if it's like the MW2 edition I got, it'll be a download code.
