I'm not sure if this is a good deal or mid.
Figure that a good deal from LAX to NRT is $500-ish. A flight from NRT to CTS is about $150-$200 on a decent airline--taking the rail would be more expensive from tokyo to sapporo.

I suppose if you figure in United/ANA is a mid-tier airline and the sub $500 flights are usually on budget airlines like zipair.

ANA economy is really great. Flew with a family of 5 last summer and we felt really well taken care of. The Honolulu to LAX leg with United was terrible though.

Miss me with the Economy fares. That long of a flight in economy sounds like a nightmare.

Ana is great but United is awful. Make sure you book only on ana metal.
Jal also offers a free connecting flight when you book directly on their site

this deal isn't bad - looks like the Star Alliance option is on ANA metal with transit in Narita.

FWIW the same price is also available via American/JAL.

price comparison for identical dates 11/4 to 11/13:
  • LAX/TYO via ANA, $694
  • LAX/CTS via ANA, $703
whether Hokkaido for $9 more is worth it is up to you.

This includes 1 bag and you probably won't get that included in the $500 price point from ZipAir and it also might not be included in the domestic flight.
