22TB drives have not been in production 5 years. The earliest review I could find was from August 18, 2022 from a Western digital gold.

https://www.storagereview.com/rev...hdd-review

So less than 3 years use maximum.
Prices of refurbs tend to drop towards the end of the year as datacenters liquidate "aging" drives. That's what we saw last year, there was just a flood of cheap really good quality refurbs.
These drives have like a 2 million hours MTBF rating... So even supposing 5 years in a data center:

5 years = 24 x 365 x 5 = 43,800 hours

This is only a fraction of the 2 million so these drives still have a lot to give!

Check over in https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/ if you are concerned about factory-recertified enterprise-class drives.

This is $11.81/TB, currently, with the current prices of HDDs, this is a really good price, however it's a lot higher than where the prices were 6 months ago, where I bought a 12TB for $74.99, which makes it $6.24/TB
I'm hoping it's a sign of prices coming down so I can start stocking up again, but if you need it now, I'll go for it.

Edit: Updated the price per TB (from $10/TB), because apparently I should avoid doing math when it's near my bedtimešŸ˜€, thanks to @PurpleNarwhal693 for catching the error.

I"m not sure that small fish like us would notice a big difference between NAS and enterprise drives, but happy to be corrected about this.

Here's a link to a Seagate X20 enterprise class drive so you can read the blurbage:

And here's one to a Seagate IronWolf Pro NAS drive for comparison:

Yeah, prices have gone way up. I got an X20 18TB refurb from GHD via eBay in Dec. 2023, and it was priced at $160 at that point. Not nearly as good as your $6.24/TB, but still better than today's prices. Yeah, makes sense to buy what you need and not really overbuy because honestly, the long-term trend is always more storage for your buck.

I can't fathom anyone who pays more than $10/TB for a used hard drive when you can buy new for $15/TB.
I would consider $7.50/TB with the 5 yr warranty. Anything with a shorter warranty would make no sense.

These are enterprise-class drives, not just run of the mill drives. If you can find a new, 22TB enterprise-class drive with a 5-year warranty at $15/TB (so $330 total), please share the details with us!

Yep. These drives are probably used in data centers for 5+ years. They are near the end of their designed life.

In for 2 surveillance drives booyah

Drives like these are going to be some of the only ones you can buy knowing they probably weren't used in a Chia farm.

All the 10,12,14,16TBs run a very high probability of being abused in a farm

I should have bought more of those but assumed there would be a $10 cheaper deal 6 months to a year later. Egg on my face.

I got excited for that thread when it triggered my alerts, but alas, none of mine do. So we wait.
