1. Yes any phone will work.
2. Yes, you can port out to Twilio/tello etc for cheap. Refer to https://www.verizon.com/support/port-out-faqs/ for PIN.

has anyone successfully cancelled the verizon line and avoided the activation fee? I already had a verizon plan so I added 2 new lines with this phone and now from verizon account I cancelled them but it says it will take about a week for the lines to get cancelled? now I am worried that verizon will apply activation fee since it will be more than 3 days, tried support chat but agent said he can't cancel since he is seeing the status as pending (I havn't inserted the sim yet), so I am wondering how exactly people are cancelling and avoiding the activation fee?

I'd suggest activate the SIMs by putting them in any phone and chat with them to cancel.

I placed an order for 5 phones with BB yesterday, picked up the phones today, came home, inserted the SIMs one by one into a single phone to get the numbers activated and to write them down on the SIMs. Then contacted Verizon CS in the chat (had to wait around 20 minutes for the agent to connect at 2am). Asked to cancel one line - they did it in 3 minutes no questions asked. I praised the employee for the knowledge and speed and asked them to cancel all my 4 remaining lines at once, mentioning spotty coverage in my area. In 10 minutes I had all the lines stopped working, screenshotted the chat saying my activation fees were waived, as well as taxes and fees. We'll see how it goes after a month. :-) If they attempt to charge me anything. :-) Thanks to the OP!

This is excellent info. When you were checking out online at best buy I assume you picked the cheapest of the 3 monthly verizon plans that appeared as part of the check out process?
Also, some users advise to set up a pin during the check out with Verizon...so was yours a new account, and, did you set up a pint during the check out (and if yes, was it needed when cancelling with customer service?)
Many thanks!

Yes, I selected the cheapest plan available, $30/month (but somehow it turned out to be $40 in the end (maybe I needed to go paperless and autopayments?) - whatever, I canceled it the same day it got activated :-))
Yes, this was my first ever account with Verizon, and I created a PIN on BestBuy's website during the checkout process.
The PIN was not necessary when canceling the plans. But it was necessary to log into my Verizon account for the first time. After logging in I saw all my 5 lines activated, and started a customer support chat - which makes me think they already knew who I was.

If you're doing a temporary lift for Equifax, that didn't work for me. I had to permanent unfreeze and that allowed the application to go through. You can freeze again after placing the order.

My 2 cents on this deal. I called up Verizon within 3 days to cancel and they mentioned Verizon produces a full month's bill directly upon activation which a customer is supposed to pay. I went with the cheapest plan they had (around $65) and their first month bill was around $74.96 (with activation fee waived) and they would give credit of $48.41 in the second month which makes my effective payment of around $26.55 for using 3 days of service.
So, if you don't activate it but cancel it directly, you could get away with paying only the cost (around $53.24 with tax) of the phone at bestbuy.

so actually I tried a new agent today, and they cancelled it without asking too many questions, I had them in writing saying the activation feee will be waived and took screenshots since I could not copy verizon chat or get the transcripts, I also asked them to send a text with the confirmation of waived activation fee, will see how much they charge me next month. I did not even put the sim in the phone.
