4th Generation and legacy network-connected Tablo DVRs allow streaming to compatible devices anywhere in your home. However, there is no method to copy/save/export recorded Tablo video onto a device for later offline viewing.
Furthermore, Tablo recordings on external hard drives are not saved in a standard file format and therefore are not playable on other devices.
When my Tivo Roamio dies I'll move on to this service. IT looks like it's getting close to Tivo quality. I still have the old Tivo UI so that's a good thing to keep going as long as I can.
I really don't want to stream live sports since with Tivo I can record them and start watching an hour later, skip commercials and finish around the same end time. Table does this too?
You get your local OTA channels which are usually not available on streaming apps

Cant comment on hd homerun cause I dont have one but the tablo has worked great for me.. I bought it based on this review and pretty much agree with it

https://www.digitaltrends.com/hom...on-review/

Some users have better experiences than others, but there are too many mishaps overall. Some improvements over time (via updates), but it's reliability is still highly questionable. That's not just from my own experiences. That's from other forums, where there have been many complaints (ever since it's inception).
This pro review paints a more realistic picture (from a true pro, as compared to the "Digital Trends" writer). The more positive reviews may have been solicited or the device was only used short term. There have been some improvements since this review was published, but it still has numerous problems (as I outlined in a previous post here and others have here as well)....

I will say I bought a Tablo in late January only to find the app on LG webOS didn't allow FF and RW of live TV, which is the major reason I bought the thing. And based on the forums, it had been broken since December. I was keeping an eye on their forums and I'm not totally sure it's fixed yet, some say yes others complain. But that's a major problem if it takes 2-3 months to fix a "core feature" on a major brand TV. I just returned it.

I've owned this version for a little over a year now. As long as you are ok with the limitations of the new version (can't download for offline, can't stream outside your home) this device has been worlds better for me than prior versions.

2-3 months would be at least somewhat acceptable. There are issues with this product that haven't been resolved since it's inception....and that's almost two years ago (19 months, to be exact....August, 2023)!

I just crawled out from under a rock and discovered ATSC 3 is deployed in many markets, so I'd want those tuners in any device I'm considering.

Some markets will be shutting down ATSC 1 as soon as 2027. There is a rule that ATSC 1 must be shut down 5 years after beginning transmission of ATSC 3.

This POS doesn't compare to your (now called "legacy") Tablo model! They sold the company to media conglomerate, Scripps, and it's been downhill ever since. This (4th gen) device has been problematic ever since day one (when it was released prematurely almost 2 years ago). They're getting cheaper and cheaper (gee, I wonder why?).
What the main problem with gen 4? I have one of the legacy units and have no issue other than I don't want to pay for anything extra. So I have to setup my recordings the day before they happen because of only 24 HR guide.

Yep. With ATSC 3 coming, ATSC 1 is going to soon be in the garbage.

Does Tablo TV require to phone home with their server to work? I mean if the company went under, will the device become a brick?

"Channels DVR" gives you access to TVE ("TV Everywhere"), Pluto TV and other streaming options, which can all be integrated in one program guide. TVE requires a cable TV login, but it can be from anyone (relative, friend, neighbor) if you don't have a cable subscription. Pluto TV doesn't require a login and provides over 400 channels. There are other streaming channels that can be integrated, but I haven't done that. You can record everything, and there's even an option to automatically skip commercial breaks. The only problem is that it's not a one box solution. It requires a server, a tuner, and an external drive. It's more complicated to set up (relatively easy if you have some computer knowledge), and it's a larger investment in hardware. "Channels DVR" is just a software package. It will cost $8 monthly for the service, but it blows this Tablo away and the general consensus is that it's the "gold standard". It really is excellent. I use it, and highly recommend it (if you can spend more and don't mind that it consists of multiple components).
Thank you, I missed that because I just saw that you need a server, a tuner, an external drive, and costs $8 a month so I stopped paying attention. Not for me but good to know.

Hope the tablo keeps working for me Smilie

I tried reading through this but it's such a long thread, I am sorry to add to it but I'm sneaking this on a work meeting Wink
Can this be used for streaming? For instance can I just patch in an HDMI and ANYTHING on the screen is able to record? I'm not sure if HDCP would come into play but let's say a local instance of Plex where my *legally ripped!* blurays aren't sitting there with HDCP.

Make sure you can get OTA channels in your area before you invest in this.

Most of local channels are yellow or orange for me.. You might need a very beefy antenna depending on area.

Word of warning, broadcasteres are only mandated to support ATSC 1.0 through 2027, after that channels may full switch to 3.0 at which point this won't be able to pick them up. Who knows if that will actually happen, but worth considering.

The problem is that there are too many questions and not enough answers re: encrypted ATSC 3.0. Also, too few TV's and other devices incorporating new tuners. It's truly annoying, but there's no point in hesitating if you need a TV/device. Although there's nothing definitive, just like with the analog to digital conversion, they'll likely be a converter of some sort. They can't leave so many consumers just twisting in the wind and/or having to purchase new products!

This device isn't used for streaming on it's own. You'll need a separate streaming device/related app for each TV, or you can also use a portable device (IE, phone, or tablet). There is no HDMI port included. It basically provides the tuner and program guide, which, in conjunction with the appropriate streaming app, accesses your local network. HDCP protocols aren't a factor.
