4th Generation and legacy network-connected Tablo DVRs allow streaming to compatible devices anywhere in your home. However, there is no method to copy/save/export recorded Tablo video onto a device for later offline viewing.
Furthermore, Tablo recordings on external hard drives are not saved in a standard file format and therefore are not playable on other devices.
When my Tivo Roamio dies I'll move on to this service. IT looks like it's getting close to Tivo quality. I still have the old Tivo UI so that's a good thing to keep going as long as I can.
I really don't want to stream live sports since with Tivo I can record them and start watching an hour later, skip commercials and finish around the same end time. Table does this too?
You get your local OTA channels which are usually not available on streaming apps

I've owned this version for a little over a year now. As long as you are ok with the limitations of the new version (can't download for offline, can't stream outside your home) this device has been worlds better for me than prior versions.

That could be considered a highly unusual opinion. Most users of prior "legacy" Tablo models who have tried this version, prefer the older versions, as they're more reliable and dependable overall. They tend to work when you need them to work and not when they decide to work (as with the 4th gen models).

Was not aware of any other DVR that allows you to record internet only channels and allows you to fast forward through the commercials.

Would greatly appreciate it if you can tell me which ones allow you to do that.
Thank you
Don't say that too loud the streamers might not know about the FF'ing yet. LOL!

I can record channels like Outside Ch., AMC Thrillers, ION Mystery, Laff More, Grit, Fawesome and lots more.

That's interesting. I've had the complete opposite experience. It's been so much smoother for me with the 4th gen (and the rest of my setup has remained the same e.g. router/internet). Maybe I had bad units in the past but this one has been good.

What the main problem with gen 4? I have one of the legacy units and have no issue other than I don't want to pay for anything extra. So I have to setup my recordings the day before they happen because of only 24 HR guide.

You can greatly improve the "legacy" guide by subscribing to the $5/month, 14-day version (which includes various other enhancements).
The main problem is that it's quirky, unpredictable, and very highly reliant upon very robust internet and antenna signal. It's as if it were designed in an environment where everything was better than perfect. Outside of that type of environment, it misbehaves.

Channels DVR
Plex

Both can be installed on your home computer, or and old one (repurpose) as long as they have 4gb Ram and ample storage.

Hey I'm a lifetime plex account holder. Can you point me in the right direction. I have a cable box how do I get it to record with plex? I used to use wmc but that's gone.

This thread is unrelated to anything other than the 4th gen Tablo (OTA, not cable) DVR and perhaps other OTA options. You might want to check Reddit and post your questions on the appropriate forum there.

Does Tablo TV require to phone home with their server to work? I mean if the company went under, will the device become a brick?

Yes. it must access the "mothership" for overnight guide updates. It's not critical, unless it misses multiple "handshakes"....but wait! Not only that, but thanks to it's genius design, it turns into a brick if your internet goes down. It's completely reliant on the internet for everything!....which can be a potentially major problem!

Sorry for all your frustrations and appreciate any of your experiences that can help with using these. Can only speak to my experience. Agree that it has had issues and maybe my timing was better because I only started using them 6 months ago, At the time, they didn't even have the apple tv app which has turned out to be extremely useful with my setup. A relatively small investment that has turned out well for me.

I'm glad to know that!

I will say I bought a Tablo in late January only to find the app on LG webOS didn't allow FF and RW of live TV, which is the major reason I bought the thing. And based on the forums, it had been broken since December. I was keeping an eye on their forums and I'm not totally sure it's fixed yet, some say yes others complain. But that's a major problem if it takes 2-3 months to fix a "core feature" on a major brand TV. I just returned it.

I have an HDhomerun and it also does not allow FF or Rew of live TV on the LG app. Seems like an LG issue.

Is this basically the same thing as an AirTV? I just had to buy an AirTV 2 because I had issues recording local channels/re-formatting my HD with the first version. I subscribe to Sling TV so I like that local channels are integrated into the same guide and interface. I might consider this later on if I end up cancelling Sling one day.

This device isn't used for streaming on it's own. You'll need a separate streaming device/related app for each TV, or you can also use a portable device (IE, phone, or tablet). There is no HDMI port included. It basically provides the tuner and program guide, which, in conjunction with the appropriate streaming app, accesses your local network. HDCP protocols aren't a factor.
Thank you! No hdmi input definitely answers that one for me. I appreciate it!

These are ASTC 1.0.
The newer spec is 3.0.

ASTC 1.0 is only guaranteed to June 2027.

IIRC, the Tablo requires internet to stream TV through, too. So if you want to consume this on an Apple TV, it's proxying through your internet, consuming bandwidth, but also then problematic if your internet is down because of storms and you're trying to watch the weather. The HDHomeRun doesn't have this limitation but was more expensive.

Edit- confirmed

i've had an tablotv for almost 10 years now, has worked shockingly well. Any benefit to moving to one of their new boxes? And does anyone know offhand if the lifetime guide sticks w/ the account or the box

It's stick to your email account. Though if were to add new devices these days, you would have to contact them to manually add those devices

The deal is great. However, my experience with Tablo did not go well and I returned it on Amazon. The setup worked great and it worked fine for a day or two. I was using it with my Roku player. A recent update from Roku broke the ability for it to work. Calling Tablo and getting fixes were only temporary. They knew about the problem and had no real fix I loved the idea of how it should work. However, I didn't want to record a show only to realize that I could not play it back.
I would give Tablo 5 stars if it didn't have those glitches with Roku. I loved the way it worked on all levels, when it worked. Also, if you buy it through Tablo you will have to pay shipping if you need to return it.

What's a comparable product? I need what this does. I don't need the guide, others are available.
Hauppauge is the best OTA equipment I have ever used and I have been doing the OTA for years now. They make simple USB tuners, external tuners and also PCI tuners. I have never had a problem with any of them! HOpe this helps!
