If you mean Double Edge by DE, I agree that is cheaper, but I have not been able to shave with DE without cutting myself and I have a very good adjustable handle for the DE razors. So, what's the secret?

It's been more than 6 ot 7 years since I started wearing a full beard now; wanted to age gracefully Before that, I used to shave clean.
So after using those Gillette one blade, two blade, three blade, five blade, 10 blade, not sure, I gave up because it was too expensive.
Thanks to SD, there was extensive- I mean seriously massive discussion happening on this forum where people swear by how cheap and good the DE blade shaving is and how good it is for skin and all, so some 10 or 12 years back, I switched to wet shaving with DE blade.
I cut myself so many times initially, tried many blades and handles.
Finally, I settled on a Feather DE Blade from Japan. The Japanese know how to make a sharp blade, and it was still my favorite. Also, after trying several handles, I settled on the Merkur Handle. After the initial cost of the Blades, BTW was very cheap, but Handle was a bit expensive. Still, overall, I used wet shaving with DE blade for almost 10 years and it save me not only tons of money, but, boy, every time I look forward to shaving like a morning ritual, it was fun, I have a good setup of Blade, Handle holder, lather and brush. You need to get used and then you will enjoy DE shaving a lot. Believe your skin with thank you later.
Also, once you go wet shaving with DE you won't go back to Gillette again.

I got these on Black Friday and regret the purchase. Unless you shave daily the blades get totally jammed with hair, and unlike the Dorco five blade system I was using before these, these ones are super difficult to clean the hairs out no matter which angles I put it under the running water, or how I tap/bang it on the basin. I'm tempted to call it a loss and just reorder more of my Dorcos.

Even if you go the DE route, disposables still have their place. Mostly in carryon luggage to avoided donating a very nice German handle to the TSA that you previously took on a road trip and didn't even realize was still in your bag.

I don't just use these, I also use the cheaper 3 blade ones and even those work fine.

I watched a video years ago where a guy rubbed his thumb across the blades in the opposite direction of the shave before use to hone them like a knife and even cheapo blades like this have worked great for me ever since.
Yeah, there are a number of stropping techniques out there. One common way to sharpen old cartridges is by running them backwards over a pair of jeans (it's such a fine edge, that it essentially hones the edge to some extent). I tried it a couple of times and it did seem to help, but I don't mess with it for the most part these days except when I'm bored. I usually find good cartridges on sale for around $1 each now and then, so it's not really worth wasting much time on. I might have done it more if I had seen it when I was a broke college student. Here's the basic idea …

And one guy took some closeups of the blades before and after where you can see a bit of the smoothing effect on a rough edge …

I don't shave everyday and I used to stock up on razors when stores had those after Christmas sales. Those razor/shave gift sets would be on clearance. Unfortunately haven't seen those in several years and I am down to my LAST Schick blade! I might give these a try but prefer max of three blades...5 blades is ridiculous

I soften facial hair with warm water first. Apply good amount shaving cream, pull the skin while shaving and use quality blades. I personally use Astra blades and I don't get cuts anymore.

These are alright but I wouldn't recommend for shaving your head. They pull on the hair and dont have the blade on the back for tight spots like the Fusion five which is king IMO

Huh. Amazon makes razors now, I am not surprised. In for 1! I've been using the Shrick Quattro with 16 refills they have been doing for years.

Protip: shave immediately after a shower. The hair is softer and makes it easier to cut. Do the same for fingernail and toenails

There have been so many free/cheap deals on SD over the years, I have a stock of razors to use. I broke open a Fusion 5 from 2009 last week.

That said, there is no better value than a Fusion 5. I shave every other day and each razor lasts me between 4 and 6 months.

Yes, disposables for travel and DE at home. Merkur is one of the BIFL brands and the not-adjustable 34C is by far the most recommended first razor. I have large hands and bought this one many years ago and still use it:.

https://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Hea...ast_sto_dp

To start, I would recommend a Merkur handle, Astra blades (not too sharp like Feathers, not too dull), Wash your face and then apply a base of shaving oil. Shave Secret is super cheap and extremely effective:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/SHAVE-SECRET-Menthol-Clove-18-75-ml/10324376?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSel... [walmart.com]

Buy a boar bristle brush (I think badger brushes are a complete waste) and any of the decent shave soaps. Prorasso is a long time inexpensive favorite:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Proraso-Refreshing-and-Toning-Shaving-Soap-in-a-Bowl-for-Men-5-2-Oz/52409... [walmart.com]

Also buy a styptic pencil.

When I first started DE shaving I cut myself every time. Use a LOT less pressure and let the razor due the work. It has now been MANY years since I have cut myself. Practice and be patient

Nice thread. Definitely seems like a rabbit hole to go down in terms of finding the perfect handle and blade.

Now I'll chime in. I have had these for years. (Only shave neck and cheekbones area to keep the beard) I have noticed I can't take more than one or 2 passes on a 5 o'clock shadow without getting hair stuck. Yall are right.

However! One pass on beard, a couple flat taps of razor head to sink and rinse and continue seemed to work for me.

I also shave like a crazy person with just warm water and dry the blades when finished.

Probably should level up my game but I'm back in with these. On the final 4 after 3 years lol.

I was finally getting decent with a DE, but I simply didn't have the time to commit to it. With a Gillette Mach 3 blade or a Fusion I can shave as fast as humanly possible (Under a minute, sometimes 30 seconds) and never cut myself. DE, I agree the shave quality was next level, but the time factor is just too high for me to keep it up. Sad I have this little time, but that's how it goes these days. I kept all my DE gear though, I'll eventually be back.

Dorco is the closest thing to a Gillette razor. These are either a bit dull or not made with precision to make them sharp to begin with. They work, they are cheap but they are not as good as the now defunct Dorco. Not all Dorco's were good but I had a couple that were excellent. They had a bunch of different varieties from 3, 4, 5 and 6 blade razors.
