Made from 100% recycled polyester, I don't think it's worth it even on sale. I mean $56 is not a bad price, but you don't get anything special other than North Face badge. There are cheaper alternatives can be found with the same characteristics.

Is the issue here with polyester in general or specifically recycled polyester? I'm just curious, as I'm not aware of recycled polyester being a bad thing.

I believe the issue is with polyester in general. Specifically the use of polyester for insulation instead of using down. Down is much better but costs more and comes from animals. The North Face tends to use materials that are better for the environment.

It's not so much about recycled polyester being bad, it's definitely better for the environment, at least in terms of reducing waste and resource use. But in this case, I was pointing out that polyester is still a cheap material, and some brands, like NorthFace, build a huge marketing story around it to justify premium prices. Most brands use recycled polyester because it cuts costs and sounds eco-friendly, which makes for good marketing and while companies love to market it like it's some breakthrough tech, it's not. In this case, the jacket doesn't really stand out from cheaper options. If you're into North Face and like the style, fair enough $56 for the logo isn't bad at all. But materials-wise, it's pretty standard stuff.

They tend to use materials that are better for the wallets of their shareholders, while posturing otherwise.

What's a cheaper alternative with the same characteristics?

It looks like the equivalent of that Ozark trail puffer that was on sale for 10 dollars just with a north face logo over it. That one even has a hood.

Down is not a better choice in all cases. This is a medium warmth, slim, lightweight jacket that will do well in the rain and for traveling. Down would not do as well for that. I'm sure North Face has down jackets too. It's not one jacket for all things. It's highly rated, and a $150 jacket for a great price. It's a previous years model, and that's why the price drop.

Love seeing all these deal options for outerwear. Just wish one of them was for a jacket shell only… I need one for next ski season! Sadwalk

The quality of the insulation makes a HUGE difference, and it's one reason why some brands cost more than others. The ozark trail is not the same jacket as the north face canyonlands at all.
