I could see 20 yrs ago even 10 yrs ago someone wanting this. If you do a quick search you can get a wireless camera fairly cheap these days that you can look at on your phone some even record. The time and hassle to install this is about the same of a real camera . I get that 6$ is cheap but if you care about your stuff enuf that your going to put forth the effort to install a dummy camera spend 20$ more and get a real one.

I have a small 5 unit apartment building.

Kids used to hang out on the front porch and the tenants were bothered. Cops were called, conversations were had, nothing worked, they kept returning.

I put a similar camera inside on the ceiling, but visible through the door from the porch.

I also put a "Video Surveillance in use" sign inside the window.

The kids stopped hanging out there immediately. They also haven't returned and this was over 10 years ago.

Also, some of the tenants think I can view the lobby/common area.

For less than $10.... it took a thorn out of my side.

Yeah. I don't get the criticism. A $20 camera installed in a place that doesn't have an outlet nearby will cost more than $20 after you're done adding an outlet. This can definitely be a deterrent.

My friend's house recently got broken into. Theirs was the only house that didn't have a visible camera near the back door.

Cameras aren't a deterent these days in any situation. Most, if not all, already expect there to be a camera watching them. Wasting your money on dummy cameras is a dummy move.

Buy a real and decent camera with the hopes your local PD will do something.

The AA batteries are only for powering the flashing LED. It's best to just not put the batteries in and not have the LED on. Looks a little more "realistic" that way. How many real cams do you see out there with flashing LED's. IMO it's just screaming "I'm fake!".

you know... you mount this somewhere people would notice it, while you mount a real camera out of sight to catch them trying to disable it before they go on thinking they're safe. but I do think most people breaking in your house don't care that much or make good enough choices in the first place. real world is tweaker thieves and not a classic novel of master thieves.

Local PD doesn't do $hit. just report takers, and nowadays most of that is done online, self reporting.

You might be right. But on the other hand, these dummy cameras are mainly to deter dummy criminals and dummy non-criminals. Both those groups are more likely not to notice the camera without a blinking red light telling them "hey! look what we have here!" So I think the red light has its use.

Also, the blinking red light indicates a "live" camera. Some might doubt if even a real camera is indeed genuine if there's no visible sign of electrical activity. Or they might think it's real but no longer functioning.

But I did rethink the battery issue and figured a small blinking light shouldn't be drawing any real power. Searched the comments (or product listing for a different camera, similar price) and the estimated battery life is indeed pretty long, about 6 months. That seems doable, to have to replace batteries just once every six months.

100% agree.
Real cameras are nice for monitoring purposes, but if someone was planning on breaking into your house, they probably have staked it out and know where the cameras are. My home got broken into a while back, and the cameras did nothing other than proving my home was broke into (nice for insurance purposes).
Police officer: So, you have a video of a guy wearing a black hoodie and a black hat breaking into your home? We'll keep an eye out.
Same with the resolution being not CSI: Miami - enhance! enhance! enhance! good. My car got hit by some hung over teenager. License plate wasn't readable. Some auto nerd friends of mine helped narrow it down to a ~2016-2018 Volkswagen Jetta.
Police officer: So, a teenager driving a white Jetta hit your car. We'll keep an eye out.

But, again, REAL cameras are great for monitoring purposes. Getting something shipped to your home? Nice to get a notification that there is activity, so that you can prevent potential theft. Door bell ring? Super nice to not have to get up to determine whether it's legit or some solicitor.

I don't know why every manufacturer of dummy cameras thinks it's a good idea to put a red LED, often times blinking, on their cameras? Legit cameras don't have this, so to me this would be a dead give a way that it is fake! Like others have said, maybe it can deter dumb thieves or people that don't know any better! But any professional thief would probably be able to know what is real and what is fake.
I think these cameras would be better suited for a joke or prank for the average Joe that doesn't know any better.
Real, legit security cameras (not the consumer crap) will have a dim reddish glow from the array of IR LEDs used for illumination at night. What I would do is get some non-working real security cameras (Maybe a local CCTV installer may have some that were pulled from a job site and replaced) and put those up, at least they will look legit.

You place these fakes in the open and reachable areas. Then you place the real ones hidden from view. Thieves will think they're out of view or even vandalize the fakes thinking it's safe.
