It has an IPS panel with no local dimming, so the contrast is very poor, and the picture quality is average. IMHO, go for the TCL Q7 instead, it's currently $399 for the 55" model.

I agree with this. Reasons I'd see for the Sony are the brand, Costco 3 year warranty, and better upscaling.

6.8 rating on rtings.com for HDR movies. You don't want to get this for HDR. There are better TVs from TCL and Hisense for the same price as this. I can't believe people spent $600 on this.

The budget Samsung, Sony, and LG models are not very good. I think you either buy their expensive ones or buy TCL if you're going for the $600 or less crowd. Hisense is more of a gamble longevity wise.

If my mom watches a lot standard definition foreign TV channels via OTA, will the better upscaling on the Sony make a big difference over a TCL?

Why buy 3rd rate chinese crap instead of a quality brand? Google TCL Hisense class action.

I would recommend this over TCL for your use case. I picked it up for $299 this week at my local Costco (reduced from $399!) as a bedroom TV. Compared to my Sony X90L, this TV delivers similar performance for regular SDR content (especially low-quality content). You just can't beat Sony for upscaling, video enhancement ("Reality Creation"), and color accuracy. The IPS panel's black levels are good enough for regular TV shows/movies. Compared to X90L, the only change I had to make was changing the 'Reality Creation' setting from auto to manual with mid-level settings. The X90L's auto mode for Reality Creation is superior, thanks to the XR processor. Costco's model also comes with the premium back-lit remote.
