Imo better to just the newest m4 for only $150 more at micro or bb price match. Youll have better resale later on too
Keep in mind the M4 adds two additional CPU cores, officially supports two external displays (alongside/simultaneous with the internal), and Apple rapidly slashed the M3 by Black Friday on sales.

M4 Air also adds Wi-Fi 6E and a 12 MP webcam.

Hence, M3's are probably headed to $699 as they clear out and M4's may track to $849 by Black Friday.

I would only buy this if you never will need dual-display, and/or just want to give Apple as little money as possible. M3 wasn't a huge bump, but M4 improves performance significantly.
Economy has gotten worse. Apple has two choices to keep sales up. Cut the M3 Air, ship a 12-inch MacBook with leftover M3, or else accept less sales.

Problem with the 12-inch, and analysts have said Apple has/is considering that, is you have to make a new keyboard, bring back the hated gel caps, or accept it won't be as thin as the Core M model.

Agree with your comment until the 3rd point. No way M3 is dropping down to $699. The M2 started to drop to $699 only from last October, 2 years after its release and even then it's been $699 only a few times. The M3 might drop to $749 at most this year either on Apple's back to school sale or this year's Black Friday.

Depends on area. Walmart was selling refurbished units until recently (September) for $515.

eBay refurbs go for around $400.

I don't see any M3s on Costco's website or in warehouse. Will they have them again? I'm more interested in an M3Pro.

I suspect Apple either dramatically reduced production to float M2's or is sitting on the M3's for a cheaper entry level MacBook.

But it's also possible they have warehouses full of them and are content to sit on them until the M2's clear channel fully.
