Very tempting. Here is my concern. Get it, put a custom os on it, fiddle around with it for a few days, then put it away never to be touched again. How many of y'all that had bought one of these or any of these retro emulation handhelds have used it longer than a couple weeks??
If you're not wearing cargos are you really even a retro gamer?
I'm using CrossMix OS custom firmware on mine, and the devs added some emulation cores that can render some 4:3 systems in 16:9 using widescreen hacks (where the image doesn't simply look like it was stretched out).
YMMV on results, however. Depending on the title, it either looks fantastic or in other cases, doesn't work very well and looks glitchy (to where it's noticeable and a distraction, so I just disable the widescreen hack on those games).
It's hit or miss, but awesome whenever it does work well with a game.

Dreamcast, N64, PS1 and SEGA Genesis are the ones I've tried so far that have this feature. Not sure if other systems on it also have that capability too. The way you enable it is by highlighting a game on the list, clicking the X button, then selecting the core labeled either "16:9" or "Wide". Some RetroArch cores also have the ability to enable widescreen hacks on certain systems.

This is a great deal on a solid retro handheld. I paid about $45 for mine with a 64GB card (included) back in June of 2024.

PSA - If you do get one with an included micro SD card, make sure you budget for buying a new brand name card. These cheap Chinese micro SD cards WILL fail on you leaving your ROMs and save files TOAST.

Consider buying a clamp on controller like the razer kishi for your phone instead. Why?

Your phone has superior: screen, speakers, storage capacity, cpu, security, battery life, build quality, emulator accuracy and access, basically everything.

You can also use those clamp on controllers as standalone controllers which comes in handy when on vacation - use as an attached controller for your phone while on the plane, then detach and use it with your PC on the hotel television as a standalone bluetooth controller.

For those souls seeing value in the SD card filled with games, I have several words for you: The Internet Archive.

I'm sure that happens all the time, but everyone is different. I have an hour bus commute I have to make once a week, and I use it almost exclusively during that trip. Been working my way through Minish Cap. But if you don't think you'd use it much, you could always try something cheaper like the R36S. It has less power/functionality, but is still a great option.

On the r/SBCgaming subreddit (the subreddit dedicated to these kinds of devices), you regularly see posts where people show off like 10 different devices. That always kind of blows my mind....

I got one of these about a month ago. Came with a kioxia branded sd card with a crapton of games, but a lot of them were arcade. Does okay on PSP, stuff like GoW or GTA won't run at full speed, even at 1x resolution. Really wish the there was an option with just a little more power, but there isn't really much of a stepup until you get into the 100-120+ price range of devices. Screen is pretty solid, can Bluetooth headphones to it.
Portmaster is hit or miss, can run stardew valley, but the N64 Zelda ports don't work on crossmix, but work on knulli. Sticks kinda suck, hard to control because of how short the travel is and how small they are and they don't have enough resistance. The lack of R3/L3 sucks if you wanna stream to it from a PC.
I would say the biggest problem with it is the price. I paid 52 for mine and while that's not a bad price necessarily, I also paid 53 for my moto G Power which came with a month of phone service and absolutely blows the TSP out of the water. G Power has 8GB of RAM and can do GameCube pretty well for the same price.

I own this.

I love being able to play all the ps1 games I never got to finish as a kid. Tales of destiny 2, star ocean, lunar, parasite eve. I own the disc's but emulation is the only way to play.

This device gad one problem and that the joysticks have an inverted issue in some games. And they lock up. This happens in marathon and postmaster.

Retro game Corp talks about this in one of their kids on the device.

The absolute best thing about this is it has good supported os that you can put on it. I'm using cross mix. The problem with most of these retro gaming handheld is that there isn't a goos community or the available os options stink, or are behind on updates. Companies like ataneo, Detroit, anbernic don't help by releasing a million versions of handheld.

Anyway, 38 bucks is great.

Spend another 5, get the trimuicase and screem protector.

Very solid device. Don't listen to the people saying that 4:3 content looks bad on this device because it's widescreen. Yes, PSP and GBA are best suited for this screen but your 4:3 content is going to look great as well and at a great size. Of course there will be black bars on the side but, if that bothers you, you can add an overlay in RetroArch to fill in the screen. Personally, I don't mind the black bars at all. Once I start actually playing a game, they just sort of disappear from my vision.

This is a very solid handheld for under $40. They also hold their value pretty well too. So if you get it and find you're one of those people that just don't use it much, you can always sell it. I bought mine for like $47 on AliExpress early last year and sold it on eBay in December (after installing Crossmix) for $75 when I upgraded to an Anbernic RG556.

People will pay more money to not have to deal with AliExpress and to get their item faster. I'm not suggesting this as a money making opportunity, just as an option to potentially break even if you get one and end up not using it much (as one person has questioned about in this thread)

I ended up trying with the white one and it worked for me. I'd prefer black, but can live with the white.

That's why I hesitate to buy the ones that are 200-300. But for this price, even if that happens... who cares?

The aspect ratio is a little more useful now that GammaOS Core has released for this. That means it gets a build of android with emulators preinstalled and support for 16:9 android games and media services. I would rather pick up the X55 for $10 more since it has my preferred dpad bottom layout, usable sticks, 5GHz WiFi for moonlight streaming, and ergonomic grips but the TSP still has better build and idle battery life.

Agreed. Recently got the Backbone One and I love the setup with a 16gb One Plus. Sold an old Retroid 3

Not a bad little handheld at all, I spent almost 10X this last week and ordered the highly recommended Retriod 5 also from aliexpress $220 but it can emulate just about everything below a switch. Figure I been wanting to get into this, so go big or go home.

Should have got the ayn Odin 2

I have a R36S I picked up for $30 about a year ago. I have probably put close to 1000 hours on it. Figured I would just game on my train commute but I was surprised by how much I enjoy these games. They are all polished because you didn't get a day 1 patch, and there was no online content so they actually end, and because the catalogue is so big you can literally skip any game that isn't a 9+/10 and still not hit bottom.
