The last 3 years I've had pretty similar documents. My taxes were quoted "complex" by H&R Block. I had done it myself the previous years but I didn't feel comfortable with the more added stuff. They charged me $600 for in-person at H&R Block. Quite steep but I learned everything I needed to know. Following the same format, the following year I used the web based. I got charged $260. This year, I tried the software based and I only spent $45 for the Premium. Looks like I could have used the Deluxe & State but didn't want to chance it. Looking back, that was just a crazy amount!

FreeTaxUSA is my choice this year after being faithful to HRBlock for years. With the cost of everything going up i just chose to go with free federal filing.
Seems good so far. Just be sure to have previous years tax returns from HRblock available to import them into FreeTaxUSA.com website.

And if you dont trust FreeTax with your data, just look at all the data breaches that have happened (Target, credit cards, T-mobile....) so youre data is likely already out there.

Block and Intuit have had more data breaches than FreeTaxUSA! I'm not aware of any with FreeTaxUSA actually.

In addition, when you efile from the desktop version of TT or HRB, you're still going through their servers and they keep a copy of your return! It's in the license agreement. So your data is still "out there."

that was my exact experience but i got charged $1800 for some business write-offs from the tax guy (at least I got refunds). Now I can do it myself for FREE from FreetaxUSA (I dont have State tax).

agreed on the import feature but you still have to check/re-enter Adjusted Cost numbers if you have 1099-B anyway.

(Not tax expert here)
Form 5329 in 2024 has some changes from 2023.
Now 5329 specifically asks whether the RMD is "during correction window" or from "other plans". But the way HRBlock asks those questions make user likely to fill qualified plans RMD into those fields, leading to penalty.

Newegg link to activate not work, I have to talk wit HR Block manually activate Deluxe software but with some bug, a flaw in 1 section of Tax cause miscalculation, I talked to HR Block for 30 minutes, she couldn't fix the flaw, i end up buy FreetaxUSA to finish my 2024 tax smoothly. I been used HR Block few year with no problem, but this year a have 1 little more tax to report and I have problems right away. No more HR Block.

I bought it 9 days ago from Best Buy for $29.99, and I am glad I did.
Found out that paying taxes with Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex worked for 5% cashback which expires 3/31.
Made a "profit" of $72.38 which made up for paying "full price".

For those who used the 2023 version, check your email for coupons. I had a "50% discount off our lowest price of the season when you purchase directly from hrblock.com." one time use coupon from back in February which was still valid. For Deluxe + State that translated to $25.

Depends upon the organization- it could not import my stuff from Fidelity and that is because Fidelity sucks. On the capital gains front, it imported the consolidated view which is a vast improvement over importing 200+ individual transactions. I used to just delete the imported cap gains enter consolidated. Import worked for Schwab and TD.
