Recently bought both the A229 (front & rear cam) and A119 mini for a family member per request and set it up for them. I have three of the A119 (regular, not mini) myself that I have used in 3 cars for years and they're great units. Helping the fam get these set up let me get hands on with these current models.

Size between the A229 and A119 mini should not be an overlooked detail. It may seem obvious because one is "mini" but it was a big difference. The 229 was a nice size - I never felt like it was too big or anything and I really liked it. When I went to install the 119 mini right after I actually had trouble with the set up and I struggled to read the screen. Yes, my aging eyes are a problem but I had no trouble with the 229 at all. I actually had to use my phone camera and enlarge the viewfinder to view the mini and navigate the menu. That being said, the mini is still solid and the smaller size may actually be exactly what people want.

Something else no one has endorsed yet is what you mentioned about buying a 2 channel unit (front and rear cam combined) vs buying 2 cameras. I am actually going with 2 cameras for my next set up. The two channel system has the benefit of a smaller camera in the rear (no screen), one memory card, joint video feed, and a single interface to set up options & date/time, etc.

But having two cameras is just an easier set up for me. Sure, I have to get an extra memory card and set the options up/make adjustments on a second screen but I set up the front unit very easily (tucked under the edge of the headliner, run along under the A-pillar cover and under the dash to the fuse box or the power port in the center console) and for the rear I kind of do the same and plug it into the power port in the back (SUV). I also feel a little better about having two recordings in the off chance one failed to capture. I was actually in an accident where I was T-boned and my car ended up it's side and I had this 2 camera set up already (put my older dash cam in the rear when I upgraded to a better one in the front). Both cams caught the accident, thankfully. Also, the guy who hit me claimed he had a green light but my recording (along with an eye witness) cleared that up. Get a dash cam, people.

So that's just my two cents. Currently driving a three row SUV and would absolutely opt for a two camera set up rather than trying to feed a cable attached to the front unit down the headliner and over 3 pillars to the back.

Had purchased one last week with that peomo code to get $25 off plus another 5% on the Amazon deals, but this is a better deal. For the 119 it was a 17.99 difference. I wish Amazon would just refund the difference on price drops vs making a purchase/return wasteful effort to recover our losses.

Looking at installing this in a Honda Odyssey. I do have a plug in the trunk area. Would it be better and easier to just buy two cameras and install a separate one in the back as a rear facing camera rather than wiring it all the way to the back?
I am also planning to install two.

How are you all getting these installed? I'd love to have these but the installation just keeps me from buying these. They say easy install but it doesn't look like it's remotely easy. Appreciate any tips for making the install smoother.
If your car has an option for power rear view mirror (or has power rear view mirror), you might be able to get an adapter that adds a USB power port. You wont have parking or rear camera, but it will give you power right next to the camera for power while driving.

e.g., search for "Dongar Technologies" on Amazon. There are other brands too.

I can vouch for the A119, but I don't know about the upgraded version. A119 is awesome!

Damn these aren't cheap. I got a bunch of dash cams from aukey rite before they stop selling everywhere. Got 2 sets of front and rear cams for 70ish and I got usb c hub with sd reader 12$. Got into an accident from the rear a month after installing it. Being able to connect to my s24 directly is so much better than dealing with the app.

The VIOFO Dash Cam A119 was $85.99 during Thanksgiving of 2024. I guess inflation and tariff jacked up the price. However, the A229 model is $0.20 cheaper now.

Check where you plan to install the camera. I was going to get a 2nd A119 mini 2 for the back of SUV. But I found out the rear wing spoiler block the sky view. The camera can't get GPS signal at location where I want to install.

Garbage brand. Had previous gen. The wifi is very slow and back camera will often lose connection unless you restart the camera or manually replug the camera.
Viofo is one of the best budget brands out there

These thing suck.
I've probably bought 2~3 of them over the last 5 years, they all eventually die 1 way or another.
1 of mine stopped recording, 1 stopped powering on or was stuck in some boot loop, and the other did some weird error after recording.

I'd stay away.

I have mini 2 in the front and some crappy 4k in rear. Want to replace rear with something better but hesitate to buy another viofo. Had mini 2 fail in about 4 months.

Got the A229 plus dual channel professionally installed for $225 yesterday, video looks great! Clearly see plate numbers.

I have two Aukeys, after a few years one of them stopped recording. Make sure you check regularly to make sure it's still working.

Just look into how they plug into your car. Don't remember what I got and it works great, except it only uses the 'cigarette lighter' and it constantly pops out slightly and I have to push it back in.

Also annoying because my car has plenty of USB and USB-C but this plug is annoying to use and looks tacky…. But this is all on me for not doing my research.

You're not confined to one connection method.

There's right ways to wire this that won't void your car's warranty, damage your vehicle, or leave janky wiring showing.

Some people add a splice into their under-dash fuse box or tap the vanity mirror power. There's also adapters that plug into the OBD2 port which requires zero wiring. If you have a newer vehicle with a powered rear view mirror, it may even have a 12v tap right at the mirror, making the required wiring less than a foot.

They even make power banks that are designed to charge while the vehicle is running and then act as the source of power while the ignition is off, thus eliminating any battery drain risk.

The biggest takeaways are that you may not want to tap into any of the auxiliary power that is "always on", since it can drain your battery, and that you should never use those "add-a-fuse" adapters that piggyback off an existing fuse by using loose wire connectors (easy way to void your warranty).
