Have 2 sets of these and also the blind bots by SwitchBot. Overall, I am fairly happy with them, however, ~10% of the time, they don't follow the schedule and I have to either tell my smart home to open/close them, or I open the app and open/close them. Even then, it might take a few attempts using the app for the curtain bots to respond.

A workaround is to create the same schedule just minutes apart and hope the next attempts open the curtains if they didn't already open.
Does this glide smoothly over the joint in the rod where it extends out?

That joint is like a bump up (in one direction) and when manually drawing the curtains over it , the curtain rings get stuck over it and it takes a few tries to get it to go over that.
According to this review, the joint has to be flush:

I see there are a few different hubs. Does anyone have a recommendation on which to get? Also, to confirm, I do need to order two of the switchbots to open both sides of curtains from center? Thanks for the help!

Yes, you'd have to purchase 2 bots, one bot for each curtain.
I have the switchbot hub 2, and it seems to work fine. Hope that helps!

Exactly my experience with these. They are pretty good except for the automation, which doesn't always trigger, but lately, things have improved on that front also. They can be easily added to Home Assistant for further automation, but you might need the hub for that. I've had the same experience with these devices. They're quite good overall, but the automation feature doesn't always activate as expected. However, I've noticed improvements in that area recently. They can be easily integrated into Home Assistant for additional automation, but you may need a hub for that.

I have both the Hub 2 and a Hub mini. Both work great. The only real benefit of the Hub 2 is the screen and temp + humidity sensors.
And keep in mind, either of the Hubs allow you to control most IR devices like TVs or projectors. That's the benefit of having multiple Hubs, since the IR needs to be relatively in sight of the any IR devices you also want to have "smart" control over. I use it, via Google Home, to turn all sorts of IR devices on and off throughout my home.

It struggles with it. I have multiple adjustable rods and you have to play around with taping it so it's tight and doesn't adjust and move but also make a smooth adjustment for it to glide over. It's annoying, but doable.

Not trying to sound rude, but at this price would it be worth it to invest in something to prevent that at the same time? I simple clips of some sort may work

I tried the last model and it just didn't have the strength to open and close my blackout curtains over my sliding glass door.

Is this one significantly stronger?

I own 6 of these with 3 solar and the other 3 non solar. Skip the solar. I got the hub 2 and the Alexa integration is nice. How well the opener works depends on your rod. I found electrical tape to smooth out of bumps and transition the best. One rod took me an hour to get it working correctly rather than constantly getting stuck with my curtain holes. I had some Amazon basic rods that worked perfectly with just a little tape wrapped that took a min each to get it smoothly. FYI, it's normally with a coupon so it's really always 70-75 bucks.
