For those paranoid about privacy: the OEM is located in China, thus must comply with the national security law there. This means that they must hand over your data upon the request of Chinese government. I know most of us are just small fish. But if you really care about privacy, you may want to learn about this. That being said, the hardware looks good and you can potentially install open source software instead of the oem's OS.

What I learned from the product reviews is that people who received the product for free from Amazon Vine are big fans.

I'm a Viner and my reviews are impartial, regardless of getting it "for free". I love my DXP4800 Plus.

Manufactured in China for a U.S. company is different from manufactured by a Chinese company. I suppose the former isn't subject to those rules.

This is irrelevant because they do not have your data, you do, in your home, on your server. If you're paranoid, install your own OS.

You're right that, with NAS, your data is physically stored on your hardware. However, you're running their software and it's connected to the Internet. That's what matters. One would have much less of such concern if they install a more trusted system software.

I thought the onboard GPU on the N100 could do hardware transcoding too?
This is correct. The N100 is used in a lot of mini PCs and they are really good as plex servers because of QuickSync on the processor. Same with the N150.

When you use their software on the NAS, to make better use of the NAS, you would likely install their companion software on your phone and computer, so that you can backup your data and access your data more easily on phone and computer. Now you're running their software on multiple of your hardware.

Synology knockoff from Shenzhen, Guangdong
LOL not a knock off. Specs & build quality blow Snology out of the water.

Have the 2-bay unit. Bought at full price - I am enjoying it so far. Performance is snappy as far as I can tell, but im not doing a whole ton with it.
I didnt even boot it with the default OS, I just installed Unraid and have been enjoying that a lot. Have a few docker containers i'm running and do basic NAS stuff and its all been snappy and fun.
I bought some cheap M.2 SSD's for the cache drive (raid 1) which I highly recommend. This caches transfers up to the NAS and benefits from SSD speeds (but ultimately depends on your network) until they're full - then there is a "Mover" function within Unraid that moves that data to your array (to your slower HDD's.) You can set this to happen nightly at 3am so you dont have to think about it.

Lots of cool/fun stuff you can do with this and honestly its a nice little package if you don't need a ton of performance, its good for a lot of low-mid power stuff. Especially if you only run docker containers when you need them, then shut them down.

Haven't done anything with VM's yet. But anyone here looking at this and/or are interested in getting into the world of Home Lab stuff, feel free to ask =]

NAS noob here. If I have a mini desktop with like a modern day CPU and good integrated GPU wouldnt be better at transcoding that any of these prebuilts? Something like a 8845HS?
Yeah. A modern day CPU should be comparable or better than the N100 on these units. But more importantly check on how many SATA ports your desktop has. I bring this up since you mention mini-dekstop, I doubt if they will have anything less than two. But its something to consider if you plan to add more storage down the line.

I'm running a Bedrock server in Docker. It hasn't gotten too much playtime and it's just for my kids and their friend but it worked fine.

I Kickstarted the 4800 and honestly it's everything I wanted. For so long I was running Plex, Home Assistant, and more on Windows on a Mac Mini with a bunch of USB drives. Far from ideal but low power! I knew I wanted to move to a NAS so I pulled the trigger on it.

I learned Docker basics and now have 28 containers running. It runs everything off the NVMe and my drives are all spun down most of the time so it idles at 20 watts. The N100 is awesome.

I stuck with the original OS because I wasn't familiar with anything else and didn't really want to get into it. And since everything I do is in Docker anyway, it doesn't really matter.

ATTENTION.

Remember this.
There are only 2 NAS companies. One is Synology and another one is QNAP.

I am rooting for these guys to do well. My Synologys have served me well, but the hardware is so limited. Hopefully Ugreen can either develop their software to the point where it would work for me or the competition spurs Synology to use better hardware. If my 2 bay Synology DS220+ had an N100, VMs would become very usuable. They work now, but are painfully slow. DSM is far enough ahead of the competition for me to stay with them.

This person is correct. I don't know if anyone remembers alternative mobile operating systems like PalmOS, but they suffer drastically if nobody develops apps for them. As it is, there aren't enough apps for Synology and QNAP. People are not graduating with a CS degree with a yearning to develop apps for a new NAS manufacturer, and nobody is hiring people to do this either.

Why not put TruNas on it?

I've never had a NAS before, but have been thinking about one since the amount of pictures on my phone and laptop just keeps growing and growing. I'm wondering if the 2-Bay DXP2800 would be enough to have raid 1 drives for my pictures/videos, but also wondering if I could run a Plex server for media on the same machine, or if I would need the DXP4800 for that?

Also, I keep seeing a lot of people use Docker containers on these...I'm a web developer and use Docker on my projects, so I'm pretty familiar with it, but can someone tell me some good use cases for it on a NAS?
