You're right that, with NAS, your data is physically stored on your hardware. However, you're running their software and it's connected to the Internet. That's what matters. One would have much less of such concern if they install a more trusted system software.
When you use their software on the NAS, to make better use of the NAS, you would likely install their companion software on your phone and computer, so that you can backup your data and access your data more easily on phone and computer. Now you're running their software on multiple of your hardware.
I didnt even boot it with the default OS, I just installed Unraid and have been enjoying that a lot. Have a few docker containers i'm running and do basic NAS stuff and its all been snappy and fun.
I bought some cheap M.2 SSD's for the cache drive (raid 1) which I highly recommend. This caches transfers up to the NAS and benefits from SSD speeds (but ultimately depends on your network) until they're full - then there is a "Mover" function within Unraid that moves that data to your array (to your slower HDD's.) You can set this to happen nightly at 3am so you dont have to think about it.
Lots of cool/fun stuff you can do with this and honestly its a nice little package if you don't need a ton of performance, its good for a lot of low-mid power stuff. Especially if you only run docker containers when you need them, then shut them down.
Haven't done anything with VM's yet. But anyone here looking at this and/or are interested in getting into the world of Home Lab stuff, feel free to ask =]

not sure about 2800
I Kickstarted the 4800 and honestly it's everything I wanted. For so long I was running Plex, Home Assistant, and more on Windows on a Mac Mini with a bunch of USB drives. Far from ideal but low power! I knew I wanted to move to a NAS so I pulled the trigger on it.
I learned Docker basics and now have 28 containers running. It runs everything off the NVMe and my drives are all spun down most of the time so it idles at 20 watts. The N100 is awesome.
I stuck with the original OS because I wasn't familiar with anything else and didn't really want to get into it. And since everything I do is in Docker anyway, it doesn't really matter.
Remember this.
There are only 2 NAS companies. One is Synology and another one is QNAP.

Also, I keep seeing a lot of people use Docker containers on these...I'm a web developer and use Docker on my projects, so I'm pretty familiar with it, but can someone tell me some good use cases for it on a NAS?
