Hey, thanks for the reply. I will concede some points, but will challenge others:
1. This is my biggest disagree by far. Celeron j is trash. It honestly wasn't anywhere near cutting edge when they started using it 5 years ago. It can't handle 4k plex with uncompressed audio in your own home. That makes it worthless.
2. 2.5gbe and 10gbe switches are very common and quite cheap. They have been for several years.
3. 10gbe spf is totally common for people with symmetrical 1gig+ home internet.
4. I have lifetime plex pass. The best feature of it is hardware encoding. I want to be able to use my 4k library wherever and whenever I want. Limiting myself to 1080p with no hdr or lossless audio in 2025 is asinine and pointless.
5. I have 1 gig symmetrical internet and a lifetime plex pass. Why would I want to bottle neck my watching of 4k forever?
Synology hasn't released a single product in the last 2+ years that could possibly be construed as plex capable. QNAP, Asustor, Terramaster, Ugreen, and even LincPlus have all put out vastly more capable hardware in the last several years. If the point of your nas is to serve documents, or record surveillance, I get the reasons to buy a synology. If you want to actually be able to serve your own media effectively, synology has no product.
For a little more than $280 you can get the hardware AND access to a NAS ecosystem such as Synology Qnap, Asustor, or whatever. $280 for this NAS is a fair price, but it's definitely not hot. As such, this discussion would be more appropriate on a NAS forum.

Agree, that's why I bought a 4800 Plus when it was on sale for $524. I've had Qnap before and now UGREEN with TrueNas. 4800 Plus is a much better deal for the hardware. Yeah there is terramaster that's on sale for $599 but it's all plastic and UGREEN is all metal, and quality is a lot better.
However, that doesn't mean it's safe to hand over the control of your NAS and data to North Korea. In the age of Internet, they can also do a lot of harm to you with your data in hand.
I wouldn't wait till someone reports nasty behavior to stop using a North Korea made OS, for example. Sometimes these things would be found out by researchers, but that would be too late already. Nobody would care to research something that very few people use. Take WeChat as example, we know they can see our chat messages due to lack of E2EE, but we never know how they are using those messages in their servers (or servers of their national security bureau), including photos videos voices. By the time citizen lab published their report about it, millions of people had already used WeChat for years.

'Along with the Great Firewall, restrictions stipulated in the law have raised concerns, especially from foreign technology companies operating in China.Regarding the requirements for spot-checks and certifications, international law firms have warned that companies could be asked to provide source code, encryption, or other crucial information for review by the authorities, increasing the risk of intellectual property theft, information being lost, passed on to local competitors, or being used by the authorities themselves. The FBI warned that the law could force companies transmitting data through servers in China to submit to data surveillance and espionage.'
This means Chinese Communist Party can take anything and everything from you any time.
