Note: it seems counterintuitive due to naming, but the home video release is preferable over theatrical if you're not trying to have any of the image cropped. That's how it's labeled on the Blu-ray version. It's more 4:3 and closer to open matte. If anyone can let me know If both versions are on the physical 4K that would be helpful to anyone interested.

Why is this movie so renowned and iconic? I watched it as a child and thought it was cool and recently rewatched it for nostalgia but I'm not sure I understand the hype when it first came out. Definitely as a kid I liked it cause it was Batman

If you bought the Batman: The Complete Animated series from here as it's been posted multiple times this may be unnecessary as that collection includes Mask of the Phantasm as well as the Mr. Freeze film Sub Zero. So hopefully that clears it up to avoid redundancy, unless you really want the 4k ultra Blu ray. .

For one the animation is incredible. 2 the story is great. 3 it goes much darker and violent compared to the series. And 4 it's awesome. 5 if you go back in time and compare this to other animated films of its era, there was nothing like this. Hell I don't even think you need to back in time animated movies still aren't like this aside from anime films. Here's a list of animated films that came out in 1993. Look at was coming out in the USA with the exception of nightmare before Christmas, will perhaps put it in to context. Also this film still rips til this day. My son loves it.
