I don't remember that, but I guess he must have been, somewhat, then, too.

It seems like it got really over the top, later, like when you first encounter the grim reapers in DMC3, and even they are being cocky.

They definitely amped up the trash talking for DMC3, yes. It's possible they wanted to show he was even cockier when he was younger. Or perhaps it was an overcorrection from DMC2, where the character was largely quiet and was poorly-received as a result.

He's slightly less obnoxious in DMC5, which I think was a conscious choice to show him having "mellowed" as he ages.

Game is good, but level design is absolutely terrible, playing as V was unnecessary, and the change to character design is jarring.
Not even in the top 3 games in the series.
DMC3 > DMC1 > DMC4 > DMC5 > DmC > DMC2
