5070 does worse than a 4070 super in many games.. just fyi
If you absolutely need a new gpu right now, this is probably the best you're going to get. The sad truth of the current gpu market is that msrp cards are a rarity and most people will end up spending at least 10% over msrp even for low end aib models. If you live near a microcenter you might be better off waiting to see if you can snag a 9070xt at under $650 when they restock, if you don't live near a microcenter you're pretty much out of luck when it comes to msrp cards.

That all being said, no gpu over $450 should have only 12gb of vram in 2025. The fact the 5070 only has 12gb is yet another example of nvidia's anti-consumer planned obsolescence. You'll likely need to turn down settings at 1440p or higher in order to remain within this cards vram buffer, and high end raytracing is unattainable. Please keep in mind that nvidia's "multi frame generation" is a relatively niche frame smoothing technology, it doesn't improve performance and actually increases latency. MFG's 4x mode is really only viable if you have at minimum a 240z monitor, and 3x mode isn't viable without at minimum a 180hz monitor.
Buying a brand new GPU with less than 16GB VRAM in 2025 is just unwise. I was playing Rise of the Ronin the other day and it was barely staying under 12GB VRAM usage. Games that come out in 2026/2027 will blow past it without a doubt.

9070xt very hard to find for msrp which was raised by $100 even at micro center. So you are looking at spending $300 more for that

I remember when $300 bought you the fastest video card on the market.
So in 1999, when the 3DFx Voodoo 3 was released at $299?

While I agree that anything over $500 should include 24GB of VRAM, 12gb is more than fine for 1080p. This is actually a great card for both 1080p and 1440p.
Isn't it sad that for three generations now, cards that cost up to $5-600 are still being considered worth buying "for 1080p?" I mean, by now with the advances in tech, you'd think $5-600 would get you a card that would be great at 4k.

Is there a reason to upgrade from a 12g 3060 if I generally only play at 1080p and usually 1 gen back games? Worried I'd just be flushing $$$ down the toilet.

12GB of VRAM in 2025 feels a bit tight for future-proofing

Thats because games are poorly optimized and yall support em so devs are lazy. AC Shadows, at 4KUltraRT, only uses 8.9GBs of vram.

This. 5070 is actually a 5060. Nvidia duped people into believing this is a 70 class card 🤣
