Not a bad deal as a standalone computer/media box, but an Intel setup is going to be better if you're trying to run a Plex server.

Realtek Ethernet doesn't play well with OPNSense, so it wouldn't make a good router either.

This thread is going to be full of unfounded claims of viruses. Ignore the misinformation.

Pretty sure you can still download windows 10 and the media creation tool from Microsoft at no charge.

Unless you own a key, or one is embedded in their motherboard as OEM this isn't going to magically activate that Windows installation. You have to buy one retail. The other option is buy OEM license, gray market or 5 finger discount.

Windows will function whether it's activated or not. Unless something is different now with windows 11 that I'm not aware of.

Forgive my curiosity, but what do you mean unfounded? To my understanding there are several investigatory youtube videos into this subject that concluded that the problem was widespread with their devices. Do you disagree, and what is your evidence to the contrary?

For all intents and purposes, this is a desktop pc. Since I don't own any products from Acemagic, I can't confirm anything about the malware fiasco.
But if you can do the following, this is a slick deal:
1. Get the product activated. Let it run thru the OOB (out of box) process to register Win 11 Pro.
2. Backup all the drivers and save it in a usb drive.
3. Reinstall Win 11 Pro and reinstall all the drivers.
This should clear anything Acemagic installed and you don't have to buy another license. If you do however buy barebones, just get the license (gray version) for $25 (more or less, depends which site you bought it from).

Go to any past SD thread on these systems and you'll see what it devolves to with misinformation. There's a petty lot on here that turned it into a meme.

I'm not disputing that they had an issue at some point, but there's a difference between caution and uninformed fear mongering.

The facts:

-It was an isolated set of devices from several years ago.

-The virus was embedded in a bad Windows ISO that was being used for OEM installs.

-A UEFI infection has never been found on these machines.

Thus, buying a bare system and using your own drive, or at least formatting and installing Windows fresh, is all that needs to be done to mitigate any risk.

But apparently all that nuance is lost on a lot of people.

Maybe they weren't alive when Sony was deliberately installing rootkits on their music CDs.

Do we know if the spec is better than mac mini? I see no RAM and no SSD but i am confused, is it coming with M2 drive? Do we know who is the motherboard maker for this mini? I would like to have the ability to update BIOS. I am planning to buy a mini desktop for my grandma so mostly i need some good cyber security (BIOS updates and secure boot) and i need reliability that something can work for 5-7 years. Grandma just needs a small box with monitor and mostly will use to surf internet, zoom calls, music and thats it. Reason i was comparing with mac mini even though we are not apple lovers is reliability for years.

Grandma is gonna delete that autoexec.bat just to have an excuse to spend time with you. Buy the Mac Mini and remember to visit often.

Almost all of these minis' come with Win 11 and many come with the PRO version. I had this mini for awhlie and it's fine, can even do some medium gaming but it gets LOUD with that noisy fan.
