And how is it doing at 4K with high settings, no DLSS or FrameGen?
Obsolete and relevant are two different things in the context of this conversation. Stay in your lane.
Nobody is talking about high end cards that progressively need lower and lower settings as the years go on.
The person I'm responding to wants all the bells and whistles. And they obviously think vRAM is the only thing driving that.
From what I see:
1. 12GB vs 8GB VRAM – The 5070 has 50% more VRAM, which might help with large timelines and effects caching.
2. CUDA Cores – 7680 (5070) vs 2560 (2070S) – Way more parallel processing power.
3. Architecture – 5070 uses Ada Lovelace (much newer, more efficient than Turing).
4. Memory Type – GDDR7 on the 5070 = faster memory bandwidth than GDDR6.
5. Ray Tracing / AI – Better 3rd-gen RT cores and 4th-gen Tensor cores on the 5070 (useful for AI-based tools and render acceleration).
6. Power draw – 5070 is more power-efficient; my PSU can easily handle either.
7. PCIe 4.0 vs 3.0 – My current GPU runs PCIe 3.0, while the 5070 supports PCIe 5.0 (though my motherboard supports 4.0 — still compatible).
Do you think the upgrade is worth it for video editing workflows, even if I'm not gaming? Or maybe wait till something else better becomes available? Would love your thoughts!
If you can find a 9070 XT for MSRP, it works great for creative workflows as seen in a few benchmarks. Newegg Shuffle has them from time to time at MSRP (the select few models).

The 12VHPWR thing is the only part that gives me pause. I've got a solid PSU, but I get the anxiety around that connector. I'll double-check cable support if I go that route.
I'll definitely keep an eye on the 7900 XT. that 20GB VRAM looks great for video editing. Just trying to weigh CUDA/NVENC stability vs AMD's raw power.

The person complaining about vRAM wants more than 30FPS and doesn't have a clue what it requires.
Nobody is saying the 3080 is obsolete, so stop getting your feelings hurt.
Or if you really care, go pull a double shift and upgrade.
If you think vRAM is the problem, you're contributing to the problem.

I would try to wait for a 9070 or 9070XT. But who knows whats going to happen tomorrow. And the 5070 is available right now.
The 5000 series has enough tech that isn't yet utilized.
There's also no new flagship games out right now and developers have stopped trying to time their release cycles around PC hardware, so let the dust settle.

The 4070S offers the same performance as the 5070, while also being able to play some of the earlier Arkham games and Mirrors Edge as they were intended.

Your statement,
"If you're expecting any card to be wholly relevant in 3 years regardless, you're already out of your depth and should switch to consoles."
Want to try to move those goal posts again, lol?
