That steam hardware survey gonna be swinging red slightly next month so nvidia is throwing crumbs with these craps 5070's suddenly in stock to keep the market share. They are sacrificing a tiny AI profit to keep the mind share. Don't give it to them greedy SOB's! 8 and 12 gb cards in 2025 is planned obsolescence in a very short period.
There is a reason the 5070 is the only modern GPU selling at MSRP.
yes, the 9070xt

Your 3080 with 24GB of vRAM? Yeah. I thought not.

And how is it doing at 4K with high settings, no DLSS or FrameGen?

Obsolete and relevant are two different things in the context of this conversation. Stay in your lane.

Nobody is talking about high end cards that progressively need lower and lower settings as the years go on.

The person I'm responding to wants all the bells and whistles. And they obviously think vRAM is the only thing driving that.
My 3080 on most games with 4K can get over 30FPS so still very relevant mister got no clue what your talking about stay in your lane, lol.

Hey everyone, quick question for those more in the know — I'm using an older GPU, the RTX 2070 SUPER FTW3 Ultra Gaming (8GB GDDR6), and I'm considering upgrading to something like the PNY RTX 5070 (12GB GDDR7). I don't really play games, but I do some video editing (5.7K footage, Insta360, and DaVinci Resolve) from time to time.

From what I see:

1. 12GB vs 8GB VRAM – The 5070 has 50% more VRAM, which might help with large timelines and effects caching.

2. CUDA Cores – 7680 (5070) vs 2560 (2070S) – Way more parallel processing power.

3. Architecture – 5070 uses Ada Lovelace (much newer, more efficient than Turing).

4. Memory Type – GDDR7 on the 5070 = faster memory bandwidth than GDDR6.

5. Ray Tracing / AI – Better 3rd-gen RT cores and 4th-gen Tensor cores on the 5070 (useful for AI-based tools and render acceleration).

6. Power draw – 5070 is more power-efficient; my PSU can easily handle either.

7. PCIe 4.0 vs 3.0 – My current GPU runs PCIe 3.0, while the 5070 supports PCIe 5.0 (though my motherboard supports 4.0 — still compatible).

Do you think the upgrade is worth it for video editing workflows, even if I'm not gaming? Or maybe wait till something else better becomes available? Would love your thoughts!
5070 is Blackwell, 40-series is Ada. 1% difference PCI-E 5.0 vs 4.0 because the bandwidth isn't being saturated. 5070 has the awful 12VHPWR connector. I have a 5090 Astral and even with the pin monitor that the Astral has, I'm still paranoid. I remember making sure my 4090 FE's cable was always seated correctly frequently too.

If you can find a 9070 XT for MSRP, it works great for creative workflows as seen in a few benchmarks. Newegg Shuffle has them from time to time at MSRP (the select few models).

Thanks, I appreciate that! Just to clarify, the RTX 5070 is still Ada Lovelace, not Blackwell (unless I totally missed a surprise release). You're spot on about PCIe 5.0 not mattering much. my board is Gen 4 and should handle it just fine.

The 12VHPWR thing is the only part that gives me pause. I've got a solid PSU, but I get the anxiety around that connector. I'll double-check cable support if I go that route.

I'll definitely keep an eye on the 7900 XT. that 20GB VRAM looks great for video editing. Just trying to weigh CUDA/NVENC stability vs AMD's raw power.

Again, you're just inserting yourself into the conversation for attention without actually having any context.

The person complaining about vRAM wants more than 30FPS and doesn't have a clue what it requires.

Nobody is saying the 3080 is obsolete, so stop getting your feelings hurt.

Or if you really care, go pull a double shift and upgrade.

So will every card if you keep letting AMD pack RAM in instead of actually developing better I/O.

If you think vRAM is the problem, you're contributing to the problem.

IMO, the 5070 is already a 2 year old card. Its on par with the 4070ti (Jan/23) or the 4070 Super (Jan/24).

I would try to wait for a 9070 or 9070XT. But who knows whats going to happen tomorrow. And the 5070 is available right now.
If you have to choose between a 4070 Super and a 5070, obviously the 5070 is the better choice as of today. So I'm not sure what your argument is.

The 5000 series has enough tech that isn't yet utilized.

There's also no new flagship games out right now and developers have stopped trying to time their release cycles around PC hardware, so let the dust settle.

Availability aside, is the 5070 the obvious choice over the 4070S?

The 4070S offers the same performance as the 5070, while also being able to play some of the earlier Arkham games and Mirrors Edge as they were intended.

I feel like these will be the new 4060's. Not great performance per buck but pretty much all you can get.
Naw, 4090 performance 😂

Because it kinda sucks as a midrange for this generation compared to previous generation and AMD 9070xt. It's basically a 4070Super which isn't a bad card, but could be had for MSRP for most of last year.

Your statement,

"If you're expecting any card to be wholly relevant in 3 years regardless, you're already out of your depth and should switch to consoles."

Want to try to move those goal posts again, lol?

It's an AI generated summary if you didn't catch the drift. Half the things mentioned there makes no sense. Simply comparing cuda core count 😅

It's my understanding that Steam's monthly hardware survey is incomplete and influenced Chinese Internet cafes. Steam's hardware survey is voluntary making it difficult to see true hardware used. Steam did report 2023 they would remove Internet cafe hardware survey data. Though there's no evidence they have based on Nvidia 3060 continued dominance.
