This won't be UL. You will need the UL ferrule with the corresponding tool.

That said, selling ferrule crimpers on woot is an interesting choice.

Using knipex ferrules this one is on the list of UL-certified crimpers https://www.digikey.com/en/produc...d-ferrules

It's for automatically tightening connectors onto electrical wires. The UL they mention in the comments is a national testing board that certifies the connection for a certain mechanical strength.

Stranded copper wire can splay (move/spread out) when it's connected to a screw/spring/whatever terminal, which can cause a bad connection or eventually lead to one.

These pliers crimp a ferrule (metal sleeve] over the uninsulated end of the stranded wire, turning it into a solid mass, which is a more secure connection.

It's the hardware/mechanical equivalent of tinning the ends with solder. Plus it's quicker, cleaner, more consistent, and done with zero heat.

I cannot believe I'm on SD reading about a Knipex ferrule crimper on sale at Woot. It's bizarro day for sure.

That said - this is a pretty sweet deal, and if I worked with ferrules enough I'd strongly consider buying one (and if I weren't as cheap, I probably would have bought one already). The obviously not as reliable and not UL listed cheap Chinese options at nearly a tenth of the price of this were good enough up until now. If I needed this for commercial or professional work this is a great deal.

These will also do the job nicely. If you're building 3D printers, cnc machines or anything where you connect wires. Even using wagos having a crimped ferrule on the wire is a best practice

Do not tin wires for terminal blocks/mechanical connections. The solder can crack when compressed and has different thermal expansion properties which can also lead to loose connections. Even though grandpa swears by tinning, crimping a ferrule on is the right way to do it.

Great catch Jeff, thanks for adding this!
I was trying to make the information relatable, but could have done a much better job with my phrasing/verbiage. My apologies to anyone confused or misled by my post.
Ferrules are always the preferred/superior choice.
