Likely because they aren't familiar with memory chips, and lots of things in the world are backwards-compatible. Will a Thunderbolt 3 accessory work with a Thunderbolt 4 port? Yes. Will a USB 2 accessory work with a USB 3 port? Yes. Will an NVME 3 SSD work in an NVME 4 slot? Yes. It's a perfectly reasonable question, and the answer is simply no in this case.
I just went through an absolute nightmare on one of the MSI b850 boards. It was one that was on sale about 3 weeks ago. I spent more than a dozen hours trying to get it to work and nothing would function. I've been building computers since probably about 2000. I've never had a dead out of the box or non-functioning out of the box motherboard before. MSI support system required me to enter the serial number to get support and they wouldn't accept the serial number. So I couldn't get support directly and had to just go to the store and RMA it. So freaking frustrating. I'm not going to probably touch an MSI motherboard again. I had one probably 15 years ago but not since then. If somebody buys it I hope it works out of the box but they're BIOS update system built into the motherboard is incredibly finicky and doesn't accept most forms of USB sticks. I tested out I think eight different sticks with capacities from 256 megabytes all the way to 128 GB. None of them would work.

Well to be fair I did have a board that could use both ddr2 and ddr3.

Not to minimize your experience, but I have had the opposite experience with MSI boards. I too have built and repaired PCs for many years now, and do it professionally. MSI have been most rock-solid, as compared to other brands like Gigabyte and Asus, particularly with AM5 and Intel LGA1700 plus. Other boards have either been DOA or have random stability issues. RMA processes have also been generally bad with all the board partners (miss EVGA 😢) but every now and then one of them with surprise me with an acceptable experience. I feel it's a similar thing with WD vs Seagate disks wear some folks have had very different experiences, and are partial to one.
I will say I have built a number of PCs with the MSI ProSeries line and have had consistent stability.
Cool, thank you for the feedback. I really really wanted to make it work. It was a total pain in the ass in every way and I really would have preferred not to have to RMA it. I went with the steel legend board by a different company. It's going to be here on Tuesday. This was the first dead out of the box computer I've ever had. So I hope it doesn't happen again :-) thanks for the feedback.
