I bought five to replace ones I have expiring in a few months—they sent the serial numbers in the shipping confirmation email. All five made in Feb of '23.

Beats the hell out of what Walmart delivered over the weekend—ones from Walmart were from 2016, 2017, 2018, and two from 2022. Absolutely ridiculous. So glad Google got them back in stock and removed the quantity limit of one.

I have four others that expire in 2031, so it works out. I'm hoping that there will be a more comparable replacement by then.

I wish Google would stop killing stuff.

It's hard to trust any of their series/lines to be around for a long time.
I'm surprised they didn't kill the keyboard while you typed

I received three today. Two expire in October 2032, and one expires May 2032. I love these things and really hope the upcoming 3rd party ones are as good.

So why is this front page if every comment is about the support expiring?

Agreed. They're very hit-and-miss with their commitment to products,

So what happens when these expire and what's a good replacement that has smart capabilities?
First Alert Z-Combo if you have a z-wave hub (Hubitat/smartthings/home assistant)

The most pain in the ass smoke detector I've ever owned, just buy a standard smoke detector..you don't need this thing constantly talking to you. You'll thank me if you don't buy
I'm not sure how yours are set up, but I have three and they never talk to me. They run a self-test every month, but that's short and just a couple loud chirps. Other than that, they just sit on the ceilings.

If you're just gambling on expiration dates, this is still far too much. These should be $50.

Because support isn't expiring on them due to government regulations. Support will last 10 years from the manufacture of the last one.

Google/nest is just discontinuing them aka no longer manufacturing.

I literally received messages this replacement message for a few of mine, I have close to 20 of these in total and I have only had one go bad. The build quality on these are excellent, it's a shame they are retiring them just like the first gen outdoor IQ Cam.

I had a system of 9 Nest (battery as well as hardwired) all expiring within the next 6 months. Replaced the hardwired with Kidde smart detectors and the battery with x-sense. It's disappointing that this is a step back from Nest. There is no warning before the alarm goes off (Nest would warn me as smoke from cooking was rising so we could avoid an alarm) and there is no path light feature. I lost 9 devices that were also sensors for the home/away feature on my Nest thermostats. The Kidde alarms do not announce the location triggered - they just say "fire" or "CO". The app does tell me the device that activated fire - but mysteriously not for CO. Overall the Kidde device is a big step backwards. They have just released a new system that use the Ring app - but none of these issues have been addressed. The x-sense system is much better but unfortunately they do not offer a hard wired option - so I am stuck with two systems and the crappy Kidde interface. I think I chose the best Nest replacement, but it's a disappointment

I have 4. I like some of the features and since I got wired version it has saved me replacing 9V batteries all the time and the dreaded 'help me chirp'. Telling me which detector is the source is also really useful.

That said one disappointment I've had is one of my pain points I was trying to get rid of by changing over to the Nests was the 'searing a steak false alarms' from my original detectors. I had understood that the Nest would (or at least should) give you a heads up when it first thinks there might a problem giving a short time to silence it before the alarm goes off for real. That has never worked from me - always goes from 'all good' straight to going off. Also while the button on the thing is easier to get to then the small one on normal 'dumb' detectors I still typically have had to use it because the time it takes to open the phone app, have it connect to the detectors, and have it process a command to silence it from the app ends up being longer than just walking up to the thing.

I got mine a few years ago with an expiration date of 2032 - kinda screwed up that people buying them years after me are getting expire dates earlier than mine. I'm actually kinda glad First Alert is taking over the product line (well, its replacement).
