There is a disclaimer from Google at the top of the page: Nest Protect price is discounted to reflect inventory aging that may result in less than 10 years of remaining sensor life.It is the sensor for carbon monoxide detection (same with any other CO detector). I just purchased some (battery) since they are discontinued, with mfg date of August 2023.I suppose after the sensor dies it can be used for just smoke/fire, and just add CO detectors, or possibly replace a couple with the new First Alert. Wouldn't have been good idea if Google made two different models? Well now they make 0 models, so I guess that's a bust…
No, you cannot really use them after they expire. Even just for Smoke/Fire. While they still work, they will start making a very loud and annoying beeping that you cannot disable without breaking the unit.

This 10 year is a bit overblown. It's only because that's how long the sensor in it is effective for. It's the materials that go bad and any co detectors are like that and some are even less.
It's not overblown because these become useless once they expire. Unlike normal smoke alarms, these will start to beep loudly after the expiration date. So even though they still work fine, you can't make use of them.

I had these. These are such a nightmare, especially the ones that are battery. Once it disconnects from Wi-Fi, it's super hard to get it to reconnect. It's crazy. I'll never buy another one again
Try changing your WiFi password. That was a nightmare.

The other weirdness is which app to use? They strong armed me into the Google Home app a while back but it didn't have all of the features of the nest app, and their site said to use the Nest app. Now it is trying to make me switch to Google Home again… fool me twice??

I wish Google would stop killing stuff.

It's hard to trust any of their series/lines to be around for a long time.
There should be a law, if you stop supporting, you should make it open source so people can still use the hardware with other software/upgrades/etc.

I bought five to replace ones I have expiring in a few months—they sent the serial numbers in the shipping confirmation email. All five made in Feb of '23. Beats the hell out of what Walmart delivered over the weekend—ones from Walmart were from 2016, 2017, 2018, and two from 2022. Absolutely ridiculous. So glad Google got them back in stock and removed the quantity limit of one. I have four others that expire in 2031, so it works out. I'm hoping that there will be a more comparable replacement by then.
@embj Can you please tell me how to find out the expiration from the serial numbers?

I bought a house with 7 of these and two of them failed already, both six years old from manufacture date.

Where can I check the serial numbers on mine?

Finally looked and saw my current units are expiring this year.

Anyone get one recently and can share the manufacture date?

Seems any alternative is a step down from these. The SimpliSafe has app integration, but they are battery only - I have hardwire, I want to use it. Have a hard time trusting some of these brands I've never heard of, smoke detectors are kind of important.

And concerned the new First Alert model is junk and I miss the chance to get the last of the Nests.

You could just google how to interpret it.

I searched on the product website before asking as I thought there might be somewhere I overlooked or another site to input the serial number that might give that info. But thanks for your helpful reply.

Taken from reddit site:
""wwyy" was found in the middle of my serial number starting with the 9th character as shown below, which can be found on the outside of the box indicating it was manufactured on the 15th week of 2020.
XXXXXXXX1520XXXX"

FML, I have 9 of these in my house that are expiring 5-10 months from now. I didn't realize until this thread that they were officially nixed, nor how close mine are to expiration.

So if I drop ~$1k, I can buy another 9 "new" ones and kick this can down the road another 6.5 years (given the relatively close expiration date of these being sold)...

Not sure what to do.

I guess Costco has these for sale for $32.50/piece: https://www.costco.com/first-aler...93715.html

For those who are moving away from Nest, what "smart" smoke alarms are you guys buying? I wish Costco sells smart smoke alarms...

That's been answered multiple times in this thread already.
